A misconception around Massage Therapy is that it “breaks up tissue”, but it’s not as simple as that.

What is more likely happening is that the brain is given new sensory data from a therapists touch which then changes the tension output and creates the tissue change.

The therapists hands aren’t forcing anything without the brains permission.

This is important because many people still think they need copious amounts of pressure to force the body to relax or get out of dysfunctions.

You don’t—you need skilled touch.

Skilled touch comes from proper assessments, evaluations and the correct approach and stimulus from person to person.

If deep tissue worked there would be a lot less pain.

The reason, in my opinion, Massage Therapy is not recognized as a legitimate medical intervention because there is a lack of standardization in the industry.

Physicians and insurance agencies will not use massage therapy as a stand-alone treatment because there’s no clear understanding as to how Massage Therapy will be applied from practitioner to practitioner.

They won’t refer for a treatment that just makes someone feel good.

They want to see measurable and functional improvements to deem something medically necessary.

Then when you add the lack of modern research in how massage therapy works the physicians and insurance basically write it off.

This is why I practice Medical Massage.

Every case study that I successfully treat is a grass roots example of the efficacy of this work.

Massage Therapy is a medical intervention and the public may not believe it yet, but from my, and my clients eyes, it is undeniable.

Everyone in pain needs transformation whether they realize it or not.

However, transformation requires you to act differently which takes a lot of energy.

If you don’t have this transformation then you will be at the whim of every medication you take or the practitioner you work with.

I think you want more control of your life than that.

Every failed treatment and medications that no longer touch the pain reinforce the idea that you are stuck inside the living hell of chronic pain and there is nothing you can do about it.

There IS something you can do about it, and it starts with being honest about what’s working and what’s not.

Honesty is therapeutic—don’t be afraid of it.

A lot of clients ask me about how emotions are stored in the body and how that might affect their pain.

I have a personal opinion, not a scientific fact, about this matter.

I don’t think emotions are stored physically in our soft tissues, but rather in the electrical properties of our nervous system.

It’s not uncommon for people to feel grief, anger, or even heightened levels of elation (laughter) when working on certain tissues.

I think when manual work is applied to our body it creates a pattern the brain recognizes and it re-processes the emotions associated with the movement or pressure.

Sometimes during the evaluation the client might not remember or associate any physical trauma to their pain, however once their brain feels pressure or movement on their body they start to say something like “you know what—a couple of years ago I fell really hard at work but I forgot about it until just now”.

When trauma happens there is an emotional response (big or small) and I wonder if our brain, in order to keep surviving, sometimes buries those feelings and emotions.

Bodywork helps us reprocess that event and sometimes that emotional weight is lifted.

Thanks to Robert Duff my clients get to try a nice on-the-go snack after their treatments this week.

The ingredient list is pretty clean and I am impressed.

With all of our lives being so busy it’s nice to have things like this to get us between meals and a better choice than some fast food.

I look at intuition as skill that comes from observing patterns.

I have clients that ask me “how do you just know where to work?”, or they tell me “you find all my spots I didn’t know were connected to my pain”.

The truth is my intuition is only strong because of trial and error.

It’s a methodical approach of testing frameworks and mapping patterns.

I’ve built up a lot of experience doing this and it becomes easier to treat efficiently and not waste time.

If you want to have a stronger intuition then build a system where you can test different variables and observe the data.

You’ll find that your “hunches” get stronger and stronger.

I like to help clients make realistic goals to help them progress through treatment.

Instead of the goal being “get out pain” we try to make it more personal.

What would you do with a pain free body?

For example, and this is quite cute and silly, a client of mine has had trouble sleeping on their side due to shoulder pain and it’s the side they used to sleep on to cuddle their partner.

They said their partner misses cuddling them in bed at night.

I said “that’s it! Our goal is to get you cuddling back with your partner again!” And we both laughed.

Well , it happened! The pain has decreased and they’re able to sleep on their side and cuddle their partner.

First of all—that’s adorable.

Second, I would ask you the same question.

What would you do with a pain free body?
