Is PCOS a lifestyle disorder?

Poly Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by an imbalance of hormones in women which can affect menstrual periods and ovulation. It is one of the leading causes of infertility in women, although it affects more than just the reproductive system. In its full presentation, a host of systems can be affected. While there is no known cure, PCOS can be managed with medications and lifestyle changes, most notably that of dietary modification and physical fitness.
Symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
• Hormonal imbalances, including higher than normal androgens
(male hormones)
• Elevated blood pressure
• Irregular or absent me**es
• Alopecia or hair thinning
• Insulin Resistance, or Diabetes
• Infertility
• Hirsutism
• Acne
• weight gain, weight loss resistance or obesity
• Abdominal fat accumulation (central tendency weight distribution)
Causes
• Eating excessive sweet and kaphagenic foods
• Eating inappropriate foods for digestive capacity: prajnaparadha.
• Long term digestive weakness: mandagni.
• Lack of love
• Lack of contact with the inner self

Lifestyle Change
Nutritional Considerations in PCOS
Careful food selection is a very important aspect of PCOS care. Some women with PCOS find success by reducing their total intake of carbohydrates (cereals, breads, pasta) and choosing to eat different types of carbohydrates that are less processed (whole wheat, brown rice, beans). Replacing refined carbohydrate products (white bread, white pasta, cakes, cookies) with whole grains, fruits and vegetables may help to reduce insulin response. You should also eat enough protein to help manage blood sugar levels.
Fitness Considerations in PCOS
According to many studies, women with PCOS can improve their insulin resistance just with moderate activity. Even if you exercise and don't lose weight, you are still reaping very important health benefits. Exercise has been shown to improve the use of insulin and can support dietary interventions to promote weight loss; it is important that the exercise program chosen is enjoyable.

PCOS- Diet and lifestyle suggested by Ayurveda

Polycystic O***y Syndrome, or PCOS, is caused by a complex hormonal imbalance. The condition affects the whole body, and can cause infertility, diabetes, heart disease and other serious medical conditions in some cases.

Diet and lifestyle choices can play an important role in controlling PCOS and its symptoms.
Diet and lifestyle as suggested by ayurveda for PCOS are as follows:

1. Adopt healthy eating habits. : By eating a diet low in carbohydrates and refined sugars you can help reverse the imbalances of glucose and insulin in your body that cause PCOS symptoms to flair up.

2. Fit exercise into your daily routine. : It can either be a 20-minute walk, playing outside with your kids, or going to a Pilates class, exercise has proven to boost metabolism and burn calories which helps to control insulin levels and, in turn, results in weight loss. Exercise can also help to stave off diabetes, a health risk for women in PCOS.

3. Relax. : Women with PCOS are more prone towards experiencing depression and mood swings. They often find themselves emotionally frustrated when their own bodies seem to purposefully work against them. So one has to relax and try and get over it. Yoga and meditation are use ful to hold the stress.
4) Eat regular, healthy meals including plenty of vegetables, fruit, salads, mixed grains and cereals
5) Drink less caffeine. Try drinking water instead, 6-8 glasses a day. Water boiled with Guduchi stems or Pterocarpus marsupium bark will give more results.
6) Cut down on alcoholic beverages.
7) Cut down on salt and salty foods to help reduce fluid retention.
8) Women with PCOS are at a higher risk for heart disease, and saturated fat and trans fats can increase that risk even more, so these fats should be limited or avoided by women with PCOS.
9) Reducing their total intake of carbohydrates (cereals, breads, pastas) and choosing to eat different types of carbohydrates that are less processed (whole wheat, brown rice, beans) will certainly help. Replacing manufactured carbohydrate products with whole grains, fruits and vegetables can help to reduce your insulin response. The diet also should include enough protein to control the amount of sugar in the blood.

PCOS- Ayurvedic view

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by an imbalance of hormones in women which can affect menstrual periods and ovulation. It is also one of the leading causes of infertility. Because of these distressing symptoms, women may also experience feelings of depression and anxiety.
PCOS affects about one in ten women of childbearing age. It is a very common problem amongst young women and teenage girls, sometimes even affecting girls as young as 11 years of age. If not treated early, serious health complications such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease can develop.
According to Ayurveda PCOS is a disorder involving pitta, kapha, medas( fat), ambhuvahasrotas ( Channels for water circulation), and arthava dhatu.
PCOS has the following symptoms:
• slight irregularities in the menstrual cycle
• mild pain on ovulation, downy hair growth

• Infertility

Ayurveda describes the disease as the disorder of any one of the three doshas and it states that kapha predominance manifests increased weight, infertility, hirsutism, diabetic tendencies, coldness, Pitta predominance manifests as hair loss, acne, painful me**es, clots, heart problems, and vata predominance manifests painful me**es, severe menstrual irregularity, and low weight.

PCOS- Yoga management

PCOS is an endocrinal disorder identified by irregular periods, infertility, and hirsutism or hair loss.
A number of studies have proven that Yoga is extremely beneficial in treating PCOS, as well as infertility and related reproductive conditions. Yoga, if practiced regularly, helps to regulate the endocrine metabolism and, as PCOS is an endocrinal disorder, the asanas (Yoga postures) help brings back normalcy. Not only does it help in healing PCOS and the whole body but it improves overall health giving you a great boost. Yoga does this by toning up and strengthening the system, it helps in weight control and in regulating all the internal systems of the body. Through the practice of Yoga, the vital Life force is channeled up, stimulating all the functions of the nerve plexus as well as the endocrine glands that are responsible for secreting the hormones.
Yoga For PCOS Includes The Following Program:
• Asanas (yoga poses) done standing, sitting and lying on your back. Avoid inverted and prone postures.
• Plenty of slow breathing. Follow this pattern: inhale for 5 counts, exhale in 10, very slowly. You must also do these pranayamas (breathing exercises): Mild Kapalabhatti (Skull Cleansing), Anuloma-Viloma (Alternate Nostril Breathing) and Ujjayi (Ocean Breath).
• Practice plenty of Shavasana (Co**se Pose) at least 2 – 3 times a day. PCOS might be a hereditary or a genetic disorder. However, it can still be cured, and relaxation plays a great part in this process.
• Follow a diet that is Yogic and Sattvic. This means a diet that is pure and simple, and primarily vegetarian.
• Keep away from stress and tension-ridden situations. Worrying isn’t going to help you one bit.
• The Kayakalpa yoga is an intrinsic exercise, done to regulate the endocrine metabolism of our body. Since PCOS is one of the endocrinal disorders; this yogasana is applicable to patients suffering from PCOS.
