Good day, friends! THREE announcements for Body Mind Belly:

1️⃣Firstly, meet Tess! I’ve changed my name to Tess, my pronouns are they/them and I identify as non-binary (really more of a femby though: femme + enby).

2️⃣SECONDLY, I’ll be shifting Body Mind Belly’s business name AND concept in the coming months. The work will be moving away from clinical nutritional therapy and more towards community health and programming for LGBTQIA2S+ and Neurospicy communities. That means educational social media content like always, many more articles/blogs to enjoy, as well as private and group nutrition and food prep/cooking education, and I’ll be building out a robust collective (for now online) of LGBTQIA2S+ and neurodivergent resources and businesses that specifically serve these communities.

What I’d love to hear from you about:
🩵New business name ideas (along the same vein as Body Mind Belly but bringing in the LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent pieces somehow)!
🧡PLEASE send me info about your LGBTQIA2S+ and neurodivergent-serving businesses. I will be vetting before listing anything, so the more info the better. Thank you!

3️⃣THIRDLY, I’ve got a new job (again)!

I just took on a new role as a Community Health Specialist for Multnomah County, which I am extremely excited about as it somehow combines all my graduate work (clinical nutrition + sustainable food systems).

Basically, I’ll be supporting the community through:
🖤Health education (in my case I may provide more in-depth education around nutrition as this is my background and I am qualified to do so)
💛Culturally appropriate education in regards to health information and guidance
🧡Informal guidance on health-promoting behaviors
🩵LISTENING + ADVOCATING FOR PATIENTS. In all caps, because this is the most important part IMHO. We often consult with patients before their appointments and then accompany them in order to be an advocate for their specific-to-them needs.

I just wanted to share that I’ve never felt so validated and seen like ever, especially not in a workplace!

I’ve always felt like my ADHD and accompanying issues don’t “qualify” as a “real” disability (cause American work and social culture tells us to suck it up, that we’re just using ADHD as an excuse to not do things “everyone” has to do or as a reason why we can’t do these things) and so I’ve never felt comfortable asking for help.

I’ve also always worked for small businesses as a freelancer so accommodations haven’t been available to me till now. I just had a conversation with the reasonable accommodations person at work and tears welled up in my eyes because I feel like my disability is validated and seen, AND, there are people and procedures in place ready and willing to help. 😭

Yep, ADHD is considered a qualifying disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504). And us ADHDers often try to carry the burden of our disability without ever asking for help/accommodations out of shame, because this disability is invisible 🫥 (when our symptoms are visible, people tend to assume we’re lazy, stupid, or just not listening).

Some questions for you to consider (for yourself):

🔵What does considering yourself as being disabled bring up for you?

🔵Do you feel like your ADHD affects you in the workplace, and if so, there are people and procedures in place at your place of work to help you?

We may not call it a “diet” anymore, but we’re talking about any sort of restrictive food patterns followed for any length of time for the purpose of changing our physical appearance.

We’re *not* talking about medical nutrition therapy treatment for medical conditions like celiac that require the absolute omission of gluten-containing foods.

But you don’t have to take my word for it (though I am a nutrition professional). Here are lots of references.

All love to you, and please be kind to your body this summer (and always)! Your body works hard and deserves your respect and love right now, as it is, in this moment. 🩵

Let's learn about ZINC + ADHD!

Zinc is a KEY nutrient for brain function: "no zinc, no think!"
It plays a key role in learning and memory. Children with ADHD have lower levels of zinc than children without ADHD.

Obtaining adequate zinc through diet is very doable, even for vegetarians (with a little extra knowledge on how to soak or sprout and cook grains, legumes nuts and seeds properly)

Zinc supplementation may help improve symptoms of cognitive impairment and depression, as well as help reduce inflammation, support the immune system and nervous system (but don't overdo it!).

The recommended daily amount (RDA) for zinc is 11mg/day for men and 8mg/day for women. Gut health issues and phytates (plant compounds that bind nutrients, which is why soaking and/or sprouting nuts, seeds and grains is important) reduce zinc absorption.

oysters (by far the highest zinc content of any food source)
beef/lamb/chicken/turkey
beans/pulses
pumpkin seeds
sesame seeds
crab
wild rice
peanuts
pine nuts
cashews
rice bran
kamut
sunflower seeds
many grain-based fortified foods

As I try to make sense of my diagnosis, and ponder what a possible ASD diagnosis might mean to me, I'm working on figuring out what my nutritional needs are.

I'm so happy to share this journey with you, and even though I am a nutrition professional (or especially because I am a nutrition professional), I want to remind y'all that this is NOT MEDICAL ADVICE. This post is also a general overview and there is a lot of nuance that is being left out, it's just scratching the surface.

Hello! For those of you who don’t know me yet, I’m Carol, and I haven’t been posting a ton lately, as I was finishing up (my second!) grad degree (in sustainable food systems)!

I’m a nutritionist that focuses on cultivating healthy relationships to self, to food, to others, and ultimately reconnect/deepen connection to the natural world. I am an advocate for LGBTQ+ informed healthcare and for building equitable solutions to the many problems facing our food systems today.

I was recently(ish) diagnosed with ADHD. The doctor prescribed me meds (stimulants) that don’t agree with me so much, and I have struggled to find resources to help me deal with some debilitating symptoms. It has been a struggle.

Even more recently, as I've been struggling with gaining (and keeping) sustainable employment, I’m beginning to think there’s more to my story than ADHD, and that I may have Autism as well. In my research, and through connecting with others, all of this has been a mind-blowing process that is beginning to make sense of my life thus far.

Follow along as I distill research into accessible nutrition and lifestyle tips to support ADHD, share information that you may also find mind-blowing, and take you with me on my journey towards a possible ASD diagnosis.

I’m also introducing my “Buy Me a Coffee” page here- as a cute way to connect and support my efforts and work. You can find that here or through the link in my bio:

Also, this is my cat, Lionel- I'm obsessed with this furball!

In their NY Times article titled "Help Black Farmers, Who Know Hyperlocal Doesn’t Mean Fancy," Tressie McMillian Cottom writes about foodways and how oppressive systems affect Black and Brown farmers' ability to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change.

Foodways, as defined by the text "Food & Society" (Guptill, Lucal & Copelton, 2013), are "patterns that establish what we eat, as well as how and why and under what circumstances."

"When a custard is not a pudding and when a sweet potato connects a North Carolina roadside vegetable store to the African diaspora, that’s an example of a complex foodway," McMillan Cottom writes.

McMillan Cottom encourages readers to support organizations that "build capacity for localized food systems," which in-turn support complex foodways.

My dearest friends, if the holidaze are a difficult time for you, please know that you're not alone, that you're loved, and to keep going!

I'm struggling more this season than I have in many years past, and have been feeling extra alone. Yet I know I'm not alone in feeling that way, and just want to let you know that I see you and am focusing all of the good mojo I can manage to gather on you this season. We're gonna be ok!

Connecting with others is one of the most important things you can do if you're struggling this season. If you are need someone to talk to, please reach out to someone, don't keep it all to yourself! If you're thinking of harming yourself, please please please call 988, the su***de and crisis hotline.
