Looking for information or resources about aphasia?

Check out the National Aphasia Association’s website: aphasia.org

The NAA website has a wealth of information about aphasia. In today’s post I’ve highlighted five resources, which just scratches the surface:

1. Virtual events and programs
2. Provider directory
3. Ask the Expert library
4. Aphasia ID cards
5. Aphasia Quiz

The info and resources on the NAA website are geared for:

-people with aphasia and their care partners
-SLPs and other health care providers
-aphasia researchers
-students
-aphasia organizations

Do yourself and your patients a favor, and take a few minutes and browse the website: aphasia.org

Mindfulness doesn’t have to be complicated.

It doesn’t have to take lots of time or energy.

It can be one breath.
One pause.
One moment of noticing.

And then maybe another.

For people with aphasia or brain injury, simple isn’t “less than”—it’s what helps make mindfulness accessible.

Simple works 🤍

Looking for mindfulness tools for your brain injury patients?

A blog post I wrote about 2 years ago shares examples of free websites, apps, books, and podcasts where you can learn about and access mindfulness practices.

Visit my blog at lotusslp.com/blog and scroll down or “search” to find it. I will also post the direct link in my stories.

Want to learn more about integrating mindfulness into speech therapy? Stay tuned because I happen to have a new resource in the works…! 👀

Today is Parkinson’s Awareness Day, and April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

I thought I’d share 10 early signs of PD to help raise awareness (sourced from The Parkinson’s Foundation).

As a speech therapist, my role on the PD care team is to help people with Parkinson’s with their speech, voice, and swallowing. I do this through individual therapy and ongoing voice practice groups. 🗣️

Feel free to reach out with any questions. I am not currently taking new clients, but am happy to be a resource as I can. Somehow the time has flown by and I now have about 15 years experience working with people with PD.

Ps - did you know that the tulip is the symbol that represents Parkinson’s awareness? 🌷

Don’t miss this! ⤵️

Next week’s “Ask the Expert” webinar though the National Aphasia Association will be honoring Dr. Davetrina Seles Gadson and her work on health equity in aphasia.

As always, these webinars are free to attend. If you can’t make it live, the webinar is recorded and posted on the NAA website and YouTube channel.

SLPs: You can earn one professional development hour (1 PDH) for attending the live webinar!

On a personal note: it’s hard for me to believe that it’s been over a year since Dr. Seles passed away. I was lucky to have met her through my work with the NAA. She was truly doing groundbreaking, meaningful work, filling a gap in stroke and aphasia research and clinical practice. She was also just SO cool! She inspired many, and her legacy lives on through her research and those she impacted. I’m honored to get to help put next week’s webinar together in her memory and to help the NAA develop more health equity resources for the aphasia community. I hope you’ll tune in next week to honor her memory - how cool would it be if this is one of our best-attended “Ask the Expert” webinars yet?!

Healthy Aging Tip: Exercise!

We’ve all heard that exercise is good for our bodies. Did you also know that exercise can reduce risk of developing Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and dementia?

ANY exercise is better than NO exercise at all. However, the current evidence recommends 150 minutes of exercise a week.

“Exercise” is any physical activity that “gets your heart pumping”, or gets your heart rate up a bit.

Some exercise ideas:
* A brisk walk
* Yoga
* Gardening / yard work
* Jogging / running
* Tennis or pickleball
* Biking
* Dancing
* Strength training

What are your favorite ways to exercise? How to you fit 150 minutes into each week? Let us know in the comments ⬇️

**This information was from the Maine Initiative for Neurologic Aging and Health (MAINAH) webinar, and the presenter was Dr. Susan Wehry.
