PCOS has officially been renamed PMOS: and it changes everything.

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. Say it with us.

Following a landmark study published in The Lancet, experts have announced that PCOS is now PMOS. It’s a name that finally reflects the full scope of what 1 in 8 women are living with: hormonal, metabolic, and cardiovascular health, not just reproductive function.

Here’s why the old name was doing real harm:

The word “polycystic” led to delayed diagnoses and inadequate care for years: because most women with this condition never develop ovarian cysts. Meanwhile, metabolic issues like insulin resistance, early type 2 diabetes, weight changes, depression, and cardiovascular risk were routinely overlooked.

As Dr. Melanie Cree, MD, PhD, one of the study’s authors put it: “Having a name focused on reproductive health was really missing what more than half of women with PMOS experience.”

This rename is 14 years in the making driven by patients who refused to be dismissed.
