What does a postpartum doula do? So many things! And each doula does things slightly differently. After 15 years, I've fined-tuned my skills and offerings to what I'm best at, and what my clients find the most helpful. Here's a short list-
-Sleep is almost always #1! Parents get to be off baby-duty, and get a restful night. Especially helpful after a challenging birth or for C-section recovery, or when there are older little ones who keep you busy during the day. I can also help baby grow to be the best sleeper they can be. My approach is gentle and responsive. My babies are often sleeping 6+ hours by 6-8 weeks. That means only one nighttime feed!
-Feeding support- Whether bottle or breast, challenges can arise. I can help with trouble shooting so things go smoothly.
-Quiet baby-related chores- I wash bottles and pump parts, do baby laundry, stock and organize nurseries, and am even happy to put together that new swing or bouncer. ๐จ
- Teaching. New parents, or even experienced ones often ask for tips on things like bathing a newborn, swaddling, baby wearing, gear/feeding/diaper options, and lots more. I love helping you practice these skills, and watching you gain confidence.
- Emotional support- "Is this normal?" A large part of being a doula is caring for moms(and dads!) as someone who has been there in all the ways. I've been told families feel safe and loved under my care, and that my warm personality and calm voice go a long way towards reassuring new parents' nerves.
