HA!
This made me think of how “Hard” life was portrayed going back a generation or two.
Well folks- it was the same way with how we managed our diabetes! I go back to “pre-glucose meter” days-When we dipped urine! It was gross and inaccurate. And insulin syringes had to be boiled to sterilize them and used over and over (they were more like dull harpoon’s). Diabetic meal planning was a DISASTER! Who remembers the “Exchange” diet? You ate an M&M and were considered reckless and non-compliant! And one donut meant a sure trip to the dialysis unit!
Yes friends we’ve come a Looong way. It still isn’t Fun-who are we kidding? But compared to 30 years ago? It’s a piece of cake 🍰!

Getting out of town for a few days? It can be complicated just trying to figure out clothes, shoes and personal “Do-Dad’s.”
But when you’ve got diabetes?

LET’S START HERE:
All medications, insulin syringes and vials, insulin pens, pen needles, and/or insulin inhalers if you’re lucky enough to use them. Insulin pump infusion sets- don’t forget to pack an extra just in case you lose your site, and Ofcourse alcohol wipes to cleanse skin.
Glucose meters, extra strips and batteries, glucose sensors, and Ketostix for us T1D’s.
Several doses of a quick glucose rescue for those pesky hypo’s that inevitably are going to occur (preferably soda/juice/gels), extra meal replacement snacks to substitute for dinner that gets delayed due to traveling mishaps, and always PLENTY of water. Carrying your diabetes identification ain’t a bad idea either!

And this is just a sample.
Hmmm. 🤔 I’m pooped.
Maybe we should just STAY HOME?!

PS-Always make sure you have all of these things- med’s, testing supplies and food with you ON YOUR PERSON!
If your blood sugar is 37 and the M&M’s are in the suitcase in the belly of the plane, they aren’t gonna help much!

Happy Monday All- no funny posts today, we’re starting the week serious.
While this picture is silly, I wanted to add it to discuss something that NEEDS to be said, although it’s not going to be popular.
Ibuprofen is an excellent pain killer- of this there is no question. If you do NOT have diabetes, that is. It is TERRIBLE if you do.
The sad truth of the matter is that it is very harmful to kidneys. It causes the vessels that supply their blood flow to narrow, which in turn, lowers the supply. We are at risk for this naturally as well just because we have diabetes and two bad phenomena working together is very harmful. I used to tell my folks that have kidney disease to stop taking it straightaway, but with more scientific research available, I’m telling EVERYONE WHO HAS DIABETES to stop taking it completely.
We’ve got the “X” on our kidneys regardless just because we have the ‘betes. Let’s not add another insult to it. This includes Alieve, Advil and Motrin. My goal is to inform you all and sometimes that includes sharing unpopular information. However, as I ALWAYS say, I don’t want ANY of you sitting in a dialysis unit any more than I want to be! You’ve got 2 beautiful kidneys. Guard them with your LIFE 🙂

Here we go Again!

I woke up to an under performing air conditioner, promises of another 90+ degree afternoon in Portland, Oregon, and a fasting glucose of 264.
“Open up that box” I say, and let’s get the pasta cooking!”
(What sounds worse than hot noodles/thick meat sauce in a smoldering day?)
It’s stacking up to be another tranquil summer day in the Pacific Northwest!

It’s OK Friends-We’re different!

Face it-most people don’t have to worry about having to check a number before going to bed at night. Or make sure they are “in balance” before going to the golf course, working out in the yard or getting behind the wheel. Or have to make 183 health decisions a day! Or make 100% certain that the Diet Coke you just ordered is, in fact, DIET! Or make sure you’ve got another sensor or extra strips for your meter before going on that trip (oh man! Going on a trip! Sometimes you gotta weigh out if it’s even worth it-Talk about Preparation😳).
So we’re Different-
Face it-
Embrace it!
You’re not going to meet anyone stronger, more brave and more determined either.
Indeed. We’ve got plenty going for us, too.

You may have noticed that I NEVER use the term “diabetic.”
This is not by accident.
I chose not to on purpose.
We all know that diabetes is an All-Encompassing disease and it occupies our thoughts every minute. We adjust our lives to stay well. We adjust our schedules to meet up with its constant demands. And we are vulnerable to its “ebbs & flow’s” in whichever direction our blood glucose takes us. And we carry insulin to prepare for the highs-and carry a glucose rescue to prepare for the crashes. Both conditions will absolutely occur at times and we MUST be prepared continually.
I figure that I give enough to the diabetes (and then some).
So to refer to myself as a “Diabetic” as well- is just too much.
I am a Parent. I am a Wife. I am a Grandparent. I am a Friend, a Sister, an Aunt, Cousin. I am a Nurse and a diabetes Advocate. To “give-in” to the disease, and declare my identity as a “diabetic” is, for me, too much to give it credit for. It’s receiving a title that diabetes does NOT deserve.
I am SO MUCH MORE than that. Therefore, I declare myself a “person with diabetes.” Diabetes does not “have or own” Me. 🙂
It may seem trivial or insignificant to give this any regard. To me, however-it’s important to recognize. Diabetes has taken enough of my attention- it doesn’t get to define me too.

So it’s FRI-YAY!!
And I get to spend time with my Grands! Five of them, ages 0-10! Whatever will we do?
Well, I’ll tell you one thing- we’re having a TREAT! Could be milkshakes, frozen yogurt (with toppings ofcourse), maybe a donut (if Grammie gets her way, which let’s face it-I usually do) or something else of a “Gooie” variety.

No, we’re not going to get Kooky and throw Caution to the Wind. But having diabetes and eating an apple fritter never did make the earth stop revolving on its axis (although plenty of people think it should). Don’t be an “Old-Thinker”- this is no longer how modern diabetes experts think in 2026. We’re realistic, capable and SHARP when it comes to our management. Most of all? We are EXPERTS in what makes us tick. Trust us- and please- no judgmental looks, gestures or comments on how we “take care” of ourselves. Wanna alienate someone with diabetes? Question their motives! Wanna friend for life with someone with diabetes? Love, accept and TRUST that we know what we’re doing. A little latitude goes a LONG way!
