🦁 Celebrating a Spirit of Service in Silverton! 👓

In July, the Silverton Lions presented Dr. Keirsten Eagles with an OLSHF Spirit of Service Award, recognizing her dedication to helping children and adults access the vision care and resources they need.

Dr. Eagles is a behavioral and developmental optometrist who specializes in vision therapy and rehabilitation, with a particular focus on vision-related learning challenges. She has also been a valued part of OLSHF’s LEAP and KEX Kids Fund provider network for years, helping extend vision care to Oregonians in need. 💙🧡

We are grateful to Dr. Eagles for her continued partnership and commitment to service, and to the Silverton Lions for recognizing a community provider who truly embodies the Lions spirit of helping others.

Congratulations, Dr. Eagles! 🦁👓

As August comes to a close, we’re shining one more spotlight on Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month. 👓💙

Clear vision can play an important role in a child’s learning, development, and success in the classroom. And because children may not always realize or communicate that they are having difficulty seeing, early vision screening matters.

Conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (eye misalignment) can be identified through vision screening, giving families the opportunity to seek appropriate follow-up care.

As Oregon students head back to school, it’s a great time for parents and caregivers to add children’s sight to the back-to-school checklist:

👓 Keep up with recommended vision screenings
👁️ Pay attention to possible changes in how your child sees or uses their eyes
🦁 Follow up with an eye care professional when a screening identifies a concern
🧡 Help protect young eyes from preventable injuries during play, sports, and everyday activities

A new backpack and school supplies help kids get ready for the classroom. Making their sight a priority helps them arrive ready to see, learn, and grow. 💙

♻️ A big thank you to Kelley Create, our printing partner, for helping us safely recycle the toner cartridges we receive at the LERC!

Thanks to their support, these cartridges can be kept out of the landfill and given a new purpose. We’re grateful for partners like Kelley Create who help us make responsible choices for our Oregon communities. 💙🧡

🦁 A big THANK YOU to the first sponsors of our SVS Back to School Campaign! 👓💙🧡

Your support is helping Student Vision Screening reach students across Oregon who might not otherwise have access to critical vision screenings.

Last year, we screened just over 200,000 students. This year, we’re working to raise that number and move closer to our goal of reaching every student in Oregon.

Because when students can see clearly, they have greater opportunities to learn, participate, and succeed in their day-to-day lives. 👓

We’re so grateful to our first sponsors for helping us kick off this campaign and expand our reach. Together, we can help even more Oregon students get the vision support they need!

📺 Closed captions are an important part of making television accessible for people with hearing loss.

But what can you do when captions are missing, inaccurate, out of sync, or blocking important information on the screen?

The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) recently shared a helpful guide explaining how to report television captioning problems and file an accessibility complaint with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC requires television closed captions to be accurate, synchronous, complete, and properly placed.

Reporting captioning issues helps document accessibility barriers and can contribute to better captioning for everyone who relies on it. 🦁👂

A heartfelt thank you recently reminded us just how meaningful access to sight care can be. 💙

Through our Patient Care Program, the OLSHF Patient Care Committee provided $278 to cover a cataract evaluation for an Oregonian who needed help accessing care.

We wanted to share his message in his own words, both in the original Spanish and translated into English. His name has been removed to protect his privacy.

English translation:
“First of all, I want to thank you for the financial assistance that made my eye consultation possible. It was an unexpected surprise. When I arrived for my appointment, I was informed about this support, which was a true blessing for me. My children, wife, and parents are in Mexico and depend on me, so I do everything I can to work and ensure they always have food, despite my eye condition. Every day when I wake up, before I even open my eyes, my thought is to keep my sight so I can continue working. I reiterate my thanks to you and to everyone who supports social well-being, regardless of nationality.”

Every person deserves the opportunity to protect their sight and continue doing the things that matter most. We are grateful to the Lions, donors, partners, and supporters who help make care like this possible. 🦁👓🧡

🌍👓 The impact of a donated pair of glasses reaches around the world.

In fall 2025, OLSHF's Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center (LERC) partnered with Worldwide Outreach to provide more than 150 pairs of reading glasses for pastors and communities in Burundi and Uganda.

Nearly 100 pairs were distributed in Burundi, where access to vision care is limited and eyeglasses are often out of reach due to cost and travel. The remaining glasses were destined for Uganda, where they would be distributed following a new customs inspection process.

Every pair of donated glasses represents renewed independence, the ability to read, work, and serve others. Thank you to our LERC volunteers, donors, and partners who help extend the gift of sight to communities both in Oregon and around the world. 💙🦁
