Lean On Me ~ Canes, Hiking and Walking Sticks

Lean On Me ~ Canes, Hiking and Walking Sticks Handcrafted canes, hiking, walking sticks and more. Making canes came naturally after a 1985 head injury made using a cane for support, a necessity.

I put longtime woodworking skills to use and began handcrafting canes for my own use. An early cane featured a loop handle, inspired by an African walking stick. This signature design has become one of my most popular and functional canes. I handcraft over one hundred originally designed canes, walking and hiking sticks and crutches, using fine kiln dried hardwoods. The designs vary from single pi

ece solid wood canes with various spiraled notched shafts, to simple contrasting wood inlays, multicolored laminations, hand carved designs with crushed stone inlays, shell and stone inserts and free form designs composed of recycled pieces. Each piece is hand cut using a variety of saws and shapers, and goes through between seven to nine separate sanding processes before being finished with the equivalent of two coats of Danish Oil to seal the wood allowing it to “breathe”, while still maintaining its resilience. In 1990 LEAN ON ME became a full time business producing unique hand crafted canes, crutches, walking and hiking sticks and more.

Once again, I must express my gratitude to all of you who continue to engage with this page. I often reflect on all the shows we did, and all the wonderful people we met over the course of many years. That you appreciate Carl’s artistry and find his canes useful in your lives is a source of great joy.
As we approach the season of many holidays, I wish you and yours the very best. Thank you.

It’s so gratifying to find so many people still engaging with this Lean On Me page despite the fact that my husband Carl - the cane maker passed away over seven years ago.
There are no longer canes for sale but I still keep this page active as a tribute to Carl’s
artistry and creativity.

I haven’t posted on Carl’s business page for a very long time, but I’m gratified to see there is continued appreciation and interest in his work. Although Lean On Me is no longer an active business, I keep this page open as a sort of tribute to his creativity and craftsmanship.
All the best to old friends and customers, and those who come to appreciate,
Donna

Our little “neighborhood”. Early morning set up of our booth at Yellow Daisy. So many memories of more than a decade at beautiful Stone Mountain Park. This 2014 Show ended up being our last.

Finishing set up for the Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain Park GA. Long time neighbor chARiTy elise designs is right next door. Good to be back in this beautiful location after missing the show last year.

Dear friends,
It has been very difficult for me, Carl's wife, to push myself through the inertia to write this message. On July 6th Carl passed from this life. We had spent our winter away as we have for the past several years, loving being with our children and grandchildren in Atlanta, and enjoying the familiarity and beauty of southern Arizona. We had not been home long when Carl experienced some unexpected health issues that in a rather short time, took him from us. This picture is the last I took of him, sitting near the ocean - one of his very "happy places".
He was so eager to get back into his shop after being away from it for so long. But he never had the chance to create again.
There have been no decisions made about
the business and as long as there are canes and hiking sticks, I will, for now continue selling them.
These are the last of the Lean On Me originals.

Once again warmer climates are calling and we are listening! We will leave our beautiful Maine in about a week. For several months we will be in the Atlanta area with family, then in early March return to sunny Arizona. We have developed a very fond place in our hearts for the southwest and are eager to return. Our travels give us so much inspiration and peace of mind! We have an exciting return trip planned, driving west and then north along the coast and visiting National Parks and friends along the way. We will return to Maine along a northern route - perhaps through Canada? It may be June before we are home this year!
It has worked very well these past years, to bring canes with us. If you are interested in ordering, look through the online gallery at lean-on-me.com and then call. We will email or text pictures of what we have that is similar and we can mail an order almost immediately. Special custom orders will need to wait until we are home in June.
We wish you and yours the happiest holiday season and a safe winter.
Thank you for your continuing support.

Check out the Gallery on our web site while we're away. We are bringing some stock with us as we travel, and may have just what you're looking for.
Have a warm and bountiful Thanksgiving.

Summer is flying by and we realize it will be September before you know it! We want you to know that although we have enjoyed the beautiful Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain,GA very much and have met some wonderful folks over the past 14 years, last year was our last show. We will not be coming this year as a drive from ME to GA in September and again in November is too much for us! Our business will be through our web site and here in Portland by appointment. Thanks to all who have been such valued customers over the years and become part of the Lean On Me family. lean-on-me.com

Thursday the 20th we say good bye to Maine for the winter. We'll be back by the first of April - so no custom orders until then. It worked out quite well last year to bring canes with us and mail orders while on the road. If you are interested in making a purchase please look in the on line Gallery (lean-on-me.com). I can send you pictures of what I have that is closest to that style, and mail orders off immediately.
