Shalom House, Inc. At Shalom House we believe that when people have the appropriate support they can get better and lead fulfilling lives in the community.

Shalom House offers hope for adults living with severe mental illness by providing an array of community based mental health services and a choice of quality housing that help people lead stable and fulfilling lives in the community. Our model for success is grounded on the following four bases:

Housing-

Shalom House provides a choice of affordable, decent housing ranging from transitional housing and group homes to independent apartments. Individualized Services-

Shalom House offers a variety of services to help our clients gain the skills and confidence they need to achieve their own goals and to successfully reintegrate into the community. These services include community integration, skills support, peer support and many others. Inclusive Atmosphere-

We believe that mental illness is best managed when consumers and providers of mental health services work together. We don't make decisions for our clients, we help them learn how to make their own choices and provide them with ongoing support to ensure success. Fighting the Stigma-

Shalom House works in the community to reduce the fear and stigma associated with mental illness so that those who suffer from mental illness may flourish in the mainstream of community life.

We've been keeping a secret... Back in the spring our friends at Renewal by Andersen reached out to let us know that we had been nominated to receive BRAND NEW WINDOWS at one of our properties for their annual Window of Giving. This was a wonderful surprise!

We have been working behind the scenes the past few months to determine which property was most in need, ironing out logistics, timing, making sure our residents had some fun activities for the day while the crew was working, and today was the day!

30+ volunteers, five staff members, and Portland Hearts of Pine Moxie the Moose came together to replace the windows at our Congress West property. It was an incredible day! We had a blast connecting with their team and just relishing in the huge impact this will have on our residents heading into winter...

To say we are speechless and so full of love and community after today is an understatement. Stay tuned for a video shot by Andersen, pictures, and more stories to come. We are in awe. πŸ’š

Our Annual Cans for a Cure contribution! Did you know we save all of our cans and bottles throughout the year just to be a part of this wonderful day?

Thank you to our friends at 94.9 WHOM for doing the leg work and getting these cans processed for the Maine Cancer Foundation. This is community!

In honor of Mental Illness Awareness Week, our staff, board members, and community partners gathered together at our Blanchard House and Woodford House to plant tulip gardens. 🌷

A group of 35 of us planted a yellow tulip garden at Blanchard, as a symbol of hope, healing, and a better tomorrow. This was done in collaboration with our friends at the The Yellow Tulip Project who help plant Hope Gardens across the country as a community-wide effort to reduce stigma around mental illness. Keep an eye out on WMTW-TV for coverage on this event!

Then, we went over to our Woodford House. At Woodford, staff privately planted a rainbow tulip garden in honor of our friend and colleague, Marlene. The sun came out and we took a moment to place each tulip in the bed. 🌷 πŸ’š

Yesterday we held our annual Staff Appreciation Picnic at Fort Williams! While cloudy and a little dreary, we made the best of the day while spending some much needed time together.

Some highlights of the day:
πŸ’š Our Property Management team showing us how it's done with a competitive kick ball game
πŸ’š Our annual Starfish Awards, recognizing staff from many of our houses and highlighting the great work they've done this year (stay tuned for the posts about our winners and their nominations!).
πŸ’š Giant bubbles blown by one of our nurses!
πŸ’š BBQ catering by the delicious Ned's Bakes & BBQs
πŸ’š A moment to acknowledge, remember, and reflect on Marlene and the wonderful work she did.

This day is always special and gives us a reason to step out of the work for a day to connect with one another.

We are thrilled that our very own Executive Director, Abby Spadone, was highlighted in this years MaineBiz Giving Guide!

Abby spoke candidly about the trials and triumphs facing non-profits, but also gave us a glimpse into her transition from Clinical Director to Executive Director.

"Since stepping into this role, I have spent a lot of time learning from my colleagues and staff members. I know that I don't have all the answers, and one of the most important things a leader can do is recognize what they don't know and learn from the people around them."

We are so happy to have her at the helm!

Last night was quite the event! πŸ— 🍚 Staff brought residents together for a night of multi-cultural cooking! Residents from homes across Cumberland and York Counties gathered in the kitchen to try new foods, spend time with our Clinicians, Program Managers, and even one of our interns, and learned about food safety and preparation.

This night was focused on being open to new experiences. New experiences (like trying foods from other cultures) has numerous health benefits, like increased creativity, curiosity, adaptability, and mental flexibility.

We are grateful to be able to make these opportunities possible for those we serve! πŸ’š

We are extending a huge thank you to our friends at Mascoma Bank today. Andrew, from the Portland branch, visited our office to drop off a $10,000 grant to help support a complete roof replacement at one of our residential properties.

This grant will help keep residents housed, safe, warm, and stable. When community partners invest in our work like this, they are building the bridge those we serve depend on to reach recovery and manage their mental illness.

We are thrilled about this new partnership! πŸ’š
