WHAT IS PPD? Psychophysiologic Disorders (PPD) is the clinical term for mindbody symptoms. PPD are physical conditions and pain symptoms in the body that develop in response to stress, trauma and other psychological factors. These mindbody symptoms can affect almost any structure, organ system or region of the body. Conditions such as chronic pain, migraine, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, and pelvic pain syndromes are just a few of the very real chronic conditions that can be diagnosed as PPD. In fact, you may be surprised by just how many different symptoms are actually mindbody disorders. The good news is that after years of clinical research, there is now evidence that many of these mindbody symptoms (previously thought to be incurable) can be relieved and even cured without surgery, physical therapy or medication. With an evidence-based approach to diagnosis and treatment, sufferers can achieve relief from their chronic pain. Learn more at EndChronicPain.org

ATNS partnered with XandY to explore how Americans experience pain and illness, understand their symptoms, and view potential causes and treatment options.

The findings offer insight into public awareness of neuroplasticity, how people understand persistent symptoms, and the barriers many face when seeking care.

The survey findings are now available on our website. Visit Neuroplastic.org to explore what we learned.

Want to hear more? We’ll be discussing the survey findings in more depth at our October 28 ATNS After Hours, open to Rewiring Project members. Sign up now! (Link in stories.)

We have more evidence than ever showing how powerfully the brain can influence physical symptoms.

So how can we continue building understanding around the role of the brain in physical symptoms?

The more we learn about neuroplastic symptoms, the more opportunities we have to recognize them, talk about them, and help people find a path toward recovery.

There’s still so much work to do. And there’s so much potential to help.

The way healthcare providers respond to patients shapes their experience of care.

Elizabeth discusses how providers who don’t understand neuroplasticity can unintentionally reinforce the distress underlying a patient’s symptoms, especially for those who have experienced past harm.

Healthcare providers need to approach patients with curiosity, compassion, and an understanding of the whole person.

Vulnerability isn’t weakness. It’s a form of strength.

For many, pelvic floor symptoms and sexual dysfunction can affect more than physical health. They can challenge confidence and the way someone sees themselves.

Michael shares why one of the biggest hurdles in helping men recover is shifting the belief that being in touch with your emotions makes you weaker. In reality, self-compassion and vulnerability can be powerful parts of healing.
