Diet culture taught many of us that we could only succeed if we ignored our body enough -

Ignore our hunger.
Ignore our fear.
Ignore our exhaustion.
Push through.

But if your goal is healing - reconnection with your body and peace with food - then those body signals aren't distractions - they're valuable information.

You don't have to let every feeling make your decisions. That’s not what autonomy means. But you do need to notice them.

The knot in your stomach.
The racing thoughts.
The urge to shut down.
The feeling that something isn't safe.

Those experiences aren't signs that you're failing Intuitive Eating. They're clues about what your nervous system needs before it can move forward.

Healing isn't about becoming better at overriding yourself.
It's about learning to listen with curiosity and compassion.

💛 Your body has been talking to you all along.

If this is your experience, I hope you'll meet yourself with compassion instead of criticism.

Your body isn't trying to sabotage you.
It's trying to protect you.

For a long time, it learned that food wasn't safe. That eating the "wrong" thing could lead to danger, shame, or rejection.

No wonder your nervous system reacts.

You don't have to force yourself through it or judge yourself for struggling.

Healing often begins by slowing down, getting curious, and helping your body discover—one small step at a time—that this moment is different from the ones that taught it to be afraid.

You deserve that kind of gentleness. 💛

You'd think finally giving yourself permission to eat would feel... freeing.

Like a celebration.
Like relief.
Like finally getting to eat the foods you've spent years avoiding.

But for many people, that's not what happens. At least, not right away.

Instead, it can feel scary.

Because your nervous system still remembers years of messages that those foods were dangerous, off-limits, or the beginning of losing control.

That's why relearning Intuitive Eating isn't just about changing your thoughts.

It's about helping your body feel safe enough to walk down the very path Diet Culture promised would lead to disaster.

If that's been your experience, you're not doing it wrong. You're learning safety. 💛

If every meal feels high stakes, there's probably a reason.

When you've spent years believing the wrong food WILL hurt you, it makes sense that your body stays on high alert.

That anxiety isn't weakness.
It's a nervous system trying to protect you with the only strategy it knows.

Learning Intuitive Eating isn't just about trusting food—it's about helping your body learn that food doesn't have to feel like danger anymore.

💛 Healing takes time. And your nervous system deserves compassion, too.

If you're tempted to quit because Intuitive Eating still feels awkward...

Please don't assume you've failed.

You're learning a completely different way of relating to food, your body, and yourself after years - sometimes decades - of practicing something else.

That kind of change takes time.

Diet Culture teaches us to expect the quick-fix. For most people when it comes to Intuitive Eating, however long you expect it to take, it's going to take longer.

💛 It's a process.

One thing that surprises a lot of people about Intuitive Eating...

You don't trade anxiety for peace overnight.

You often trade one kind of anxiety for another.

At first.

Instead of worrying about whether you're following every food rule perfectly, you're worrying about whether it's the right thing to do.

Diet Culture convinced us that the world of food is terrifying - a disaster waiting around every bad-food-corner. Every wrong bite has a consequence.

So of course your nervous system feels more settled following the rules. As terrible, shame-inducing, depriving, boring and tedious as the rules could be, at least you were sure they'd lead you in the direction you wanted to go.

When food feels like a mine field, there's something deeply settling about that kind of certainty that comes with an expert calling the shots.

Diet culture didn't just teach us what to eat.

It taught us where to look for safety.

For years, the rules promised:
✔️ Follow them and you'll be okay.
✔️ Control everything and you'll feel secure.
✔️ Ignore your body's signals—they can't be trusted.

Then Intuitive Eating comes along and quietly asks you to do almost the opposite.

Listen inward.
Question the rules.
Accept uncertainty.

No wonder it can feel unsafe at first.

That feeling isn't proof you're failing.

It's often proof you're stepping outside a system that taught you to trust rules more than yourself.

❤️ If you've ever thought, "Why does this feel so hard?"...you're not alone.

What if Intuitive Eating doesn't feel wrong because you're doing it wrong?

What if it feels wrong because it asks you to question years of learning about food, your body, and yourself?

That kind of change doesn't happen overnight.

❤️ If this resonates, you're not alone.

If it feels slow, that doesn’t mean it’s not working - or that it’s hopeless.

Small steps are how real change begins - and how it lasts.
