Please read this letter about Dr. Plante who is running for the presidency of the American Psychological Association. He recently published an article condemning society's response to 'Karen's'. He lacks insight and racial awareness and has some obvious unexamined racism. If you also believe the APA deserves a better leader who can help our nation heal from racialized trauma rather than inflict more, please consider signing the petition.

We at Open Mind Medicine are deeply anguished by the unabating murderous violence against members of our Black communities. We join others in experiencing this grief and in demanding justice for the inhumane murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many other Black people. We acknowledge the compounding and enraging reality that these murders are not isolated incidents. We recognize the collective intergenerational trauma that Black people experience due to the current, historical, structural, and systemic realities of racism and the impact this has on one’s lived experience as well as physical and mental health. We stand against racism and hate and deeply hope that equality and justice do not only exist in statements, laws, or Constitution, but in people’s hearts, minds, and everyday policies and practices.

To members of the Pacific Northwest Black community and beyond, we say:
We hear you! We see you! We believe you! Your pain and your lives matter!

We pledge to continue the important work of unlearning our own racist conditioning and white supremacy indoctrination, to act to advance social justice inside and outside of the office, and to support the personal and collective healing from racialized trauma that harms us all.
