The Oregon Pediatric Society is heartbroken by today's shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend. We grieve with the families who lost a child or loved one, and we hold close the students, educators, and first responders whose lives were changed today.

To the pediatricians, nurses, and providers in Central Oregon caring for children and families tonight: we are with you.

Children everywhere may have questions and big feelings in the coming days, whether they were at Silver Rail or saw the news. We encourage families to reach out to their pediatrician if their child is struggling. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988.

No child should be afraid to go to school. This is unacceptable in our community; this is unacceptable in all communities. As pediatricians, we know gun violence is preventable. We will keep working with families, communities, legislators, and government officials across Oregon to keep children safe.

In 1976, OPS had 120 dues-paying members working together to advocate for Oregon's children. Today, that number has grown to 569 dues-paying members, with an additional 121 complimentary members.

As we celebrate 50 years as a non-profit organization, this growth reflects the incredible dedication of pediatric providers across Oregon who believe in the power of collective advocacy, education, and community.
