Are you exercising just to burn calories… or are you building a stronger body? 💪

Those are two very different mindsets.

If the only way you measure a successful workout is by how many calories your watch says you burned, you may be missing some of the biggest benefits exercise can give you.

Instead, start asking:

💪 Am I stronger than I was last month?
🏋️♀️ Can I lift something I couldn't before?
🥾 Can I climb stairs or hike more easily?
❤️ Is everyday life getting easier?

Those victories matter too.

🏃♀️ CARDIO or WEIGHTS? 🏋️♀️

If I gave you 45 minutes and told you your goal was to lose weight, which would you choose?

A run?
The treadmill?
A cycling class?
Or would you pick up some weights and strength train?

For years, women have been told:

Want to lose weight? Do MORE cardio.
Walk longer.
Burn more calories.
Sweat more.

But what happens when you're doing all that cardio…and the scale still isn't moving? 😩

The natural reaction is often:

“I guess I need to do MORE cardio.”

But there’s another important piece of the equation we can't ignore as we get older:

💪 MUSCLE.

In Episode 19 of the Vanessa Carlson Fitness Podcast, we're talking about cardio vs. strength training for weight loss after 40—and the answer may not be as simple as choosing one over the other.

Because I want you to start thinking beyond:

🔥 “How many calories did I burn?”

And start asking:

💜 Am I getting stronger?
💜 Can I do things I couldn't do before?
💜 Is everyday life getting easier?
💜 What do I want my body to still be capable of doing 10 years from now?

We're not just training for a number on the scale.

We're training for the next 10, 20, 30+ years of our lives. 💪

Doing MORE cardio but still not seeing the changes you want? 🏃♀️😩

Many women have been taught that weight loss means more cardio, more calories burned, and more sweat.

So when the scale stops moving, what happens?

More cardio.

And still nothing changes.

But there may be another piece of the equation you're overlooking: MUSCLE. 💪

In Episode 19 of the Vanessa Carlson Fitness Podcast, we're breaking down cardio vs. strength training for weight loss after 40—and why the answer isn't as simple as you might think.

🥩 46 grams? 100 grams? 150 grams? One gram per pound?! 🤯

If you’re a woman over 40 trying to figure out how much protein you actually need, you’ve probably heard ALL kinds of answers.

And eventually you’re sitting there thinking:

“Can somebody just tell me what I’m supposed to eat?!” 😂

Here’s the truth:

There isn’t ONE perfect protein number for every woman.

Your needs can depend on things like your size, age, activity level, goals, and overall health.

But protein DOES deserve our attention as we get older.

Why?

Because protein helps us maintain and build muscle, and maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as we age. 💪

And strength isn’t just about how much weight you can lift.

It helps you:

🛒 Carry your groceries
🪜 Climb the stairs
👧 Play with your kids or grandkids
✈️ Travel
💪 Maintain your independence
❤️ Keep doing the things you LOVE

But I don’t want healthy eating to become another thing you have to obsess over.

So instead of starting by counting every gram of protein you eat, try asking yourself one simple question at every meal:

“WHERE’S MY PROTEIN?” 🥚🍗🥩

Breakfast?

Lunch?

Dinner?

Start paying attention.

And if you discover one meal is consistently lacking protein, start there.

Add something simple.

Something you enjoy.

Something you can actually maintain.

Because you don’t need a perfect diet.

You need healthy habits you can actually maintain. 💜

🥩 46 grams? 150 grams? 1 gram per pound?! HOW MUCH PROTEIN DO WOMEN ACTUALLY NEED? 🤯

If you're a woman over 40, you've probably heard completely different recommendations about how much protein you should be eating.

And eventually you're thinking:

“Can somebody just tell me what I'm supposed to eat?!” 😂

Here's the thing:

There isn't one perfect protein number for every woman.

Your needs aren't necessarily going to look exactly like someone else's.

Protein becomes especially important as we get older because it helps support and maintain muscle and strength—and strength helps us continue doing the things we love. 💪

💜 YOUR BEST YEARS AREN’T BEHIND YOU.

Please don’t look at your body at 40, 50, or 60 and believe that your best years have already passed.

They haven’t. 💪

Your body may be different than it was 20 years ago.

Different doesn’t mean worse.

You can still:

💪 Become stronger
❤️ Improve your health
🌱 Build new habits
🔥 Challenge yourself
✨ Surprise yourself with what your body is capable of doing

Vanessa’s message is simple: don’t use getting older as a reason to give up on yourself.

Instead of trying to get your younger body back, start asking:

How strong can I become NOW?

💜 YOUR BEST YEARS AREN’T BEHIND YOU.

Please don’t look at your body at 40, 50, or 60 and believe your strongest years are already behind you.

They’re not. 💪

Your body may be different than it was 20 years ago.

But different doesn’t mean worse.

You can still become stronger.
You can still improve your health.
You can still build new habits.
And you can still surprise yourself with what your body is capable of doing.

Instead of constantly trying to get your 25-year-old body back, what if you started asking:

“How strong can I make the body I have TODAY?”

Would you lift weights? 🏋️♀️
Walk more? 🚶♀️
Prioritize sleep? 😴
Eat differently? 🥗
Train for a 5K or a hike? 🥾
Stop punishing your body and start taking care of it? 💜

Getting older doesn’t mean giving up.

Another year is another opportunity to grow, serve, love, become wiser—and YES, become stronger.

🔥 Did your metabolism suddenly “break” when you turned 40?

It can certainly FEEL that way.

But your metabolism doesn’t just simply fall off a cliff the moment you turn 40.

As we move through different seasons of life, other things can change too:

💻 We may sit more
😴 Sleep less
💪 Lose muscle
🚶♀️ Move less throughout the day
❤️ Experience changes in stress and hormones

Usually, it’s not just one thing—it’s several small things that have changed over time.

And THAT is actually good news.

Because there are still things you can influence. 💪

There is HOPE. 💜
