A birth plan implies that birth follows a script. It doesn't.

A birth preference list is something different -- a one-page communication tool that tells your care team who you are, what matters to you, and what you'd like when a choice is available. It leaves room for things to change. Because things change.
The families who go in with clear preferences don't end up more disappointed when the plan shifts. They end up more informed. That's the whole difference.

We build this together in our prenatal meetings. It's one of my favorite things to work on.

After years of working in these rooms, here's how I actually think about birth.
Birth belongs to the person giving birth. Not to the hospital, not to the doula, not to cultural ideas about what birth should look like. My job is to support you- not to have opinions about your choices.

The right choices will always be the one that makes sense for you, in your situation.

And knowledge and support together change the experience. Confidence doesn't eliminate fear or pain. But it transforms how people meet those things. I've seen it.

Before I became a doula, I spent 30 years as a public school educator.

That career gave me things I couldn't have gotten any other way. How to explain something complicated to someone who is scared and overwhelmed. How to stay grounded when everyone around you is not. How to hold space for hard things without making them harder.

I also have six grown children and ten grandchildren, which means I've watched the parenting journey from almost every angle. The newborn haze. The toddler chaos. The teenage years I will not be discussing in detail. And now the joy of grandparenting, which is the part where you get to be present for all the good stuff and then go home and sleep.

I bring all of that into the room with me. Not just the training and the certifications -- the lived experience of someone who has actually been through this, more than once, from more than one direction.
