Dr. Hyung Mo “H.M.” Lee (1926–2013) was a trailblazer in organ transplantation whose work helped change the future of modern medicine. 🩺 Raised in North Korea and later escaping to South Korea, Dr. Lee earned his medical degree from Seoul National University in 1949 before coming to the United States to continue his training. 📚🥼
In the 1950s, he joined the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU School of Medicine), becoming part of one of only four transplant programs in the world at the time. Over the years, Dr. Lee helped shape how kidney transplantation is practiced worldwide. He was a charter member and the 11th president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, played an important role in advancing the National Organ Transplant Act, and helped lay the foundation for what would become the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
Dr. Lee retired in 1997 as Chairman of the Division of Vascular and Transplant Surgery at MCV, but his curiosity and drive never slowed down. After retirement, he earned a law degree and continued exploring new academic interests. 👨⚖️ Remembered as a gifted surgeon, thoughtful leader, and generous mentor, Dr. Lee’s legacy continues to save lives and inspire generations. 💙
