Despite the fact that we are having some snow here in the DMV, it is springtime! If you are like me and want to move away from heavy winter comfort foods into lighter, fresher choices, check out Hometown Harvest. They deliver local, farm fresh (mostly organic) produce, meat, dairy and more right to your door. I've been using then for 2 months and have been very happy. Unlike a CSA, you do not have to pay ahead or make any kind of commitment. You just go online whenever you want and order what you want at that time. It's the best of a CSA and a grocery store. Hometown harvest.com. Check them out!

Ok, here is a recipe for yummy and guilt free chocolate truffles that are actually good for you!
In a food processor add:
about 12-15 pitted organic dried dates
8 oz melted dark organic unsweetened chocolate (available at Whole Foods)
about 2 T organic honey or raw organic agave nectar (to taste)
1 c hazelnuts
1 t natural vanilla extract
process
until it comes together like a very thick paste. Roll into balls and coat with organic unsweetened cocoa powder. In the summer keep refrigerated so they don't stick together.
Enjoy!!

This brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "food poisoning." Original list found in Dr. Jayson Calton and certified nutritionist Mira Calton's new book, Rich Food, Poor Food .

Hi everyone,
I found this info on the website inspirationgreen.com and thought you might be interested. Most people know to avoid plastics that contain BPAs, but many people don't realize that most of our canned goods are also exposed to BPAs throught the can's lining. Below is a list of some of the "good" ones and some of the "bad" ones. Hope it's of interest to you!

WITHOUT BPA:

Eden Foods: All 33 of its organic beans, chili, rice & beans, refried, and flavored.

Trader Joe's Brand: Canned corn, tomatoes, beans (except baked beans), tunafish, anchovies, poultry, beef, coconut milk, fruit (except mandarins) and vegetables (except artichokes).

Hunt's Tomato Products: Only their plain tomatoes - but great first step!!!

Whole Foods: 27% of its store-brand canned goods. No specifics given!*

Amy's: All tomato based soups and as of March 1st, all of Amy's canned products will start transitioning to BPA-free.

Campbell's Soups: Announced March, 2012 that it will be phasing out BPA from its cans! They have yet to make clear when that will begin, or what they plan to use instead of BPA.

Native Factor: Coconut Water.

Native Forest: Organic coconut milk, asparagus, mushrooms, hearts of palm and all of their canned fruits.

Ecofish (Henry & Lisa's): Canned Tuna.

Oregon's Choice: Canned Tuna.

Vital Choice: Canned salmon, albacore tuna, sardines and mackerel.

Wild Planet: Canned Sardines and tuna in glass jars.

Nature's One: Organic powdered baby milks.

Muir Glen: Is 'just' starting to transition to BPA-free - (only its) tomato products. I would wait for six months before purchasing.

Tetra-pak (aseptic containers) are lined with Polyethylene, not BPA. 'Pomi' Brand Chopped tomatoes in tetra-paks are becoming more widely available.

WITH BPA:

Eden Foods: Canned tomato products (look for their new - glass jars)

Trader Joe's Brand: All soups, chilis and stews. Plus; Sardines, Crab, Cherrystone Clams & Oysters, Mandarins, Hatch Chilies, Artichokes, Organic Baked Beans.

Whole Foods: 73% of its store-brand canned goods.

ALL food cans out there other than those listed above...

Annie's, Bionaturae, Brad's, Muir Glen, Westbrae cans are lined with BPA.

Most All Aluminum Cans are lined with BPA.

Polycarbonate plastic (grouped in #7) contains BPA and BPAF (worse!).

Many shiny thermal receipts contain BPA.
(ATM receipts, cash register receipts, prescription labels, lottery/airline tickets, etc)
Don’t hand children receipts that might contain BPA!
Don’t recycle receipts that might contain BPA!

Hope everyone stayed warm, dry and with power during Sandy. Also, Happy Halloween! Here's a guilt free chocolate mousse recipe to help you keep your hands off of all the Halloween candy. The recipe sounds weird, but trust me, it will taste like a very rich chocolate mousse full of heavy cream when it's done. Enjoy!

In a blender combine:
2 boxes silken tofu (this is the kind you would find on the shelves in a little, white paper box, not the kind packed in water in the refrigerated section)
1 bag semi sweet chocolate chips, melted in the microwave (set the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between)
1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
1 Tbs. instant coffee dissolved in 1tsp. warm water (if desired)

Blend all the ingredients together. The mixture will be a bit watery. Pour into individual bowls, cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to firm up and cool.

Let me know how you like it!
