Your volunteer paramedics, serving our community in Calvert County and delivering professional, lifesaving emergency medical care, since 1990. Since its founding in 1989, Calvert Advanced Life Support has remained dedicated to providing advanced life support care to the residents and visitors of Calvert County. What began as a small group of committed volunteers operating out of a single room in the basement of the courthouse in Prince Frederick has grown into a respected countywide organization with a long tradition of service, professionalism, and community commitment. On July 1, 1989, the organization held its first official meeting under the guidance of Calvert County’s first Medical Director, Dr. Daniel Fricke. During that meeting, the organization elected its first officers and laid the foundation for what would become one of the region’s most respected volunteer paramedic services. On January 1, 1990, Calvert ALS was officially in service and answered its first emergency call using a used advanced life support chase vehicle purchased from the Charles County Mobile Intensive Care Unit program. Operating from modest quarters in the courthouse basement, members worked under challenging conditions with limited space and resources, yet remained committed to delivering the highest level of prehospital emergency medical care to the community. Over the years, Calvert ALS relocated several times as the organization expanded to meet the growing needs of the county. From shared space at Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, to a long-standing home in the basement of a local medical office, and later a larger facility on Theater Drive, each move represented another step forward in the organization’s development and capabilities. As emergency medical services evolved within Calvert County, Calvert ALS expanded its operational footprint by placing advanced life support equipment throughout the county and increasing response capabilities in multiple communities. Today, the organization works alongside county career staff while proudly remaining a 100% volunteer agency — continuing a tradition of volunteer service that has defined the organization since its inception. In 2006, Calvert ALS moved into its current headquarters in Prince Frederick, providing significantly expanded space for operations, training, meetings, and housing of emergency response vehicles. The facility remains the organization’s home today and serves as a hub for volunteer paramedics dedicated to serving the community. Calvert ALS has built a strong reputation for advanced medical training, clinical excellence, and innovation in prehospital care. Members regularly train on the latest emergency medical techniques and utilize advanced equipment and treatment protocols typically found in larger metropolitan systems. The organization has embraced progressive lifesaving initiatives, including a whole blood program that has already helped improve outcomes and save multiple lives in critically injured patients. This commitment to modern medicine and continuous training ensures that the citizens of Calvert County always receive high-quality care when seconds matter most. For decades, Calvert ALS has provided advanced life support coverage throughout Calvert County’s unique geography, spanning more than 200 square miles bordered by the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River. Through dedication, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to public service, the organization continues to answer the call whenever the community needs it most. Today, Calvert ALS remains committed to its mission of providing high-quality emergency medical care while preserving the proud tradition of volunteer EMS throughout Calvert County. If you are interested in becoming a Paramedic or serving your community, we are always actively seeking new members. CALS announces the passing of life member John Hassler. Saturday, August 22nd, was an exceptionally busy day for our volunteer paramedics of Calvert Advanced Life Support.

The day began early at 8:00 a.m. with the 2026 Solomons Dragon Boat Races. This annual event attracts hundreds of spectators as well as multiple teams competing for the championship title. Calvert Advanced Life Support dedicated two medic units to stand by at the event alongside units from Solomons Volunteer Fire Department. The festivities continued until 2:30 p.m.

After a brief period of downtime, Calvert Marine Museum hosted a concert featuring "Brothers Osborne," a popular country band with thousands of fans. Calvert Advanced Life Support once again dedicated two units to provide medical coverage for the concert, working together with Solomons Volunteer Fire Department and St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department.

Throughout the day, Calvert Advanced Life Support maintained five medic units in service from 7:00 a.m. until midnight, ensuring continuous coverage for emergency calls and special events across the county.

Calvert Advanced Life Support is dedicated to assisting individuals and organizations in any way possible. The team is composed of members who consistently go above and beyond to help others. CALS primary response vehicles are SUVs that are carefully maintained by both the members and Calvert County Fleet mechanics.

At the end of their serviceable life, typically after five years, CALS seeks to support less fortunate departments in the DEL-MAR-VA region by offering their vehicles at a significantly reduced price. This initiative helps ensure that the vehicles continue to serve local communities and contribute to saving lives.

Recently, two CALS members, Chief10B Lavinge and Lieutenant Dickson, traveled to Allegheny County, Maryland, to deliver M103 to the Barton Hose Company. M103 will now serve the residents of Allegheny County for years to come.

Medics Respond to an Injured Subject on a Tractor: At approximately 11 am this morning, emergency units in the Prince Frederick area were alerted to a report of an injured individual on a tractor. As crews from Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, CALS Chief10B, and PA204 responded, updated information revealed that the injured person was about a mile off the road in a field surrounded by woods.

Engine 22 and Chief10B arrived at the scene together and proceeded to reach the injured individual. Upon arrival, Chief10B assessed the patient and found serious injuries, prompting a request for aviation to transport the individual to a trauma center.

Chief10B worked with members of Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, PA204, and Chief10 to fully immobilize the patient using a longboard before removing him from the tractor. After the patient was safely removed, Chief10B, PA204, and Chief10 continued to evaluate his condition in the rear of PA204.

Maryland State Police Trooper 6 landed in the field adjacent to the scene and transported the patient to a regional trauma center.
