Let me explain.

I got a full night’s sleep last night (and decent sleep during my call shift the night before). I went to church this morning, and our holiday weekend plans were rained out for the afternoon.

When things at home aren’t the way they were when I was home all the time, I feel off. Sometimes it’s healthier to talk back to that feeling and sometimes it’s healthy to do something about it.

When meals are prepped I don’t worry about my kids at home when I’m at work.

When things are organized I know I can come home tired and be able to do the minimum to feed myself and then get some rest.

We also eat healthier and save money, which decrease my stressors.

All things considered, this was a good way to spend the afternoon on a rainy Sunday off. I promised myself I would do only the shelves, not the drawers or doors (those I save for when I can take the outside and deep clean). I steam cleaned the shelves and got rid of two and a half bags of accumulated food that needed to go! And now I can sit down and make strawberry jam in peace. ☮️

(**not shown: me going to hunt down my dog in the nature preserve behind our house right in the middle of all this! That GPS collar isn’t for nothing!)

One of my most important midwife mentors taught me: always take a walk outside if you can. Even just a few minutes of sunshine can make a difference.

It’s so hard to notice when it creeps up on you…but sometimes you hav to stop and come into the light before someone gets hurt.

End of shift drive home - took twice as long as usual but home never looked better. About a foot of snow so far where we are, how about you?

When you the chance, get outside, get some sunshine and get some good food in you. Your break is your reset. Prevent burnout in birthwork by taking care of yourself in the moments you get! No, a walk or a massage can’t fix everything, but mindfully prioritizing a break as a time to choose something healthy and fulfilling is a mindset that the work isn’t all-consuming.
