We love you, Bill! ❤️ What can we say about Bill Moran? The man, the myth, the legend. For more than 30 years, Bill was the heart and soul of Whole Earth.

Bill and his wife, Carol, once owned the Tempting Tiger downtown. When it closed in the early 90s they found their way to Whole Earth. Bill became our Customer Service Manager and the face of Whole Earth. He was a mentor, an activist, a friend. Father Whole Earth.

If you needed something, Bill would find it. If you wanted to make something healthier or tastier, Bill had an idea. If you had a few extra minutes, you might find yourself talking with him about what was on his mind. Bill always had something interesting on his mind.

It’s hard to imagine this place without him because Bill and Whole Earth have always been intertwined.

Even after retiring, he never really left. He was there every day, shopping, having lunch with friends or just enjoying a place he loved and loved him right back.

Bill was a diehard environmentalist and walked to work every day. He once told me his 14 year old car only had only 10k miles. One of my favorite Bill stories captures this perfectly. He once drove to NYC to see a play. Afterward, he got on the train and came home. The next morning, he went outside and wondered, “Where’s my car?”

His car was still in NYC.

That was just Bill.

He loved music, film, books, ideas and conversation. He loved this Borges quote:

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”

And then there’s Mark Twain whose words seem written just for Bill:

“Princeton would suit me as well as heaven; better in fact. For I shouldn’t care for that society up there.”

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carol, his daughter, Natalie, generations of Whole Earth coworkers and more friends than we could count.

Today would have been Bill’s 87th birthday. Happy Birthday in heaven, Bill! 🎂 We hope the society up there is proving you wrong, the music is good and they’ve got something delicious to eat.

We love you. We miss you. Whole Earth will never quite be the same without you! ❤️

During our 56 years in business, we've been part of so many lovely intertwined stories of small, local businesses that represent the passion and knowledge of dedicated, independent food entrepreneurs. After Tempting Tiger closed, owners Bill and Carol Moran came to work at Whole Earth. Bill was our deli manager and then our longtime, and much beloved, customer service manager. And you'll still find Carol at work in our deli kitchen to this day. We're also fortunate to have Small World Coffee as a coffee supplier (their Crispy Hippie was created for us!) and to count owner Jessica Durrie as a customer and friend.
