Taking the Guesswork Out of Rehab

Our new KINVENT force plates allow us to see things that can be difficult to detect just by watching someone move. They objectively measure how much force each leg produces and can identify differences in strength, balance, weight bearing, stability, power, and right-to-left symmetry.

This technology can be valuable for many different patients—not just athletes. We can use it during rehabilitation following ACL or meniscus surgery, total knee or hip replacement, ankle or foot surgery, Achilles injuries, fractures, and many other orthopedic conditions. It can also help older adults working on balance, strength, walking, and reducing fall risk.

The force plates aren’t only for testing. They can become part of the rehabilitation itself. We can use the real-time feedback during exercises to teach patients to load both legs appropriately, improve balance and control, increase strength and power, and progressively challenge the body as recovery continues. We can also incorporate this technology with other advanced rehabilitation techniques, including blood flow restriction (BFR) training, when appropriate.

For an athlete, we can objectively measure jumping, landing, power, and side-to-side symmetry to identify deficits that may still exist even when they feel ready to return to sport.

The goal is simple: find the deficits, target treatment toward what actually needs improvement, measure the results, and help each patient return to the activities they love as safely and efficiently as possible.

This is honestly one of the coolest additions I’ve made to the clinic recently—right up there with our radial shockwave technology—and I’m incredibly excited about what it will add to our rehabilitation programs.

I’m sharing a short video that gives you a better look at what these KINVENT K-Deltas force plates can do.

I’ve always felt strongly that we need to push beyond simply getting a patient “better.” Whether it’s an athlete returning to the field or court, or someone wanting to get back to farming, riding horses, riding a motorcycle, working, or simply performing their normal daily activities, my goal is to get them back as strong, safe, and functional as possible and reduce the risk of re-injury.

Returning to sport—or returning to life—shouldn’t be based on observation alone. These force plates combine objective, hard data with synchronized video analysis to identify differences in strength, power, loading, jumping, landing, balance, and movement patterns that we simply may not be able to see with the naked eye.

Most importantly, we can compare one leg to the other, identify asymmetries, and work toward getting both extremities functioning as strongly, efficiently, and symmetrically as possible. Instead of simply thinking a patient looks ready, this technology gives me another level of awareness as a clinician. It helps identify exactly where the remaining deficits are, allowing us to target those areas during therapy and then retest to objectively measure improvement.

Ultimately, it gives us another powerful tool to help each patient reach their optimal level of function at discharge—whether that means returning to competitive sports or simply getting back to the activities that matter most to them, with greater confidence and a reduced risk of re-injury.

⭐ UPDATE: Our Patient With 5 Years of Chronic Achilles & Plantar Fascia Pain

We’ve shared this patient’s story before, and we wanted to give you an exciting update on her progress.

After five years of chronic Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis, she had exhausted other treatment options and was living with significant daily pain. Prior to beginning Radial Shockwave Therapy and a progressive loading exercise program, the next option presented to her by her physician was surgery.

When we started, she could barely walk comfortably, couldn’t perform a heel raise, and certainly couldn’t hop on that foot.

Now, after just 5 Radial Shockwave Therapy treatments combined with progressive loading exercises, she reports NO Achilles tendon pain and no heel pain at the origin of the plantar fascia. Her only remaining discomfort is a small area through the middle portion of the plantar fascia.

Even better—she can now perform a heel raise and actually hop on that foot, things she couldn’t come close to doing before treatment.

She estimates she is 90–95% improved, and she still has two treatments remaining!

Once we finish treating the right side, we’ll begin working on her left Achilles and plantar fascia, which have similar—but less severe—chronic symptoms.

Five years of pain. Surgery was the next option. Five treatments later, she’s 90–95% better and doing things she hasn’t been able to do in years.

🚨 NEW TECHNOLOGY AT PRINCETON PHYSICAL THERAPY & SPORTS MEDICINE! 🚨

We’re excited to announce the addition of SmartCuffs 4.0 Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training to our clinic!

Blood Flow Restriction training allows us to perform strengthening exercises using much lighter resistance while still providing a strong stimulus to the muscles. SmartCuffs use individualized limb pressure measurements to help us apply BFR appropriately for each patient.

BFR can be a valuable addition to rehabilitation for patients who may not yet tolerate traditional heavy strengthening, including those recovering from surgery, injury, periods of immobilization, or significant weakness and muscle loss.

Potential benefits of BFR training include:

This patient recently completed a 10-treatment course of radial shockwave therapy for trigger finger.

In the patient’s own words:

“When we began this process, my finger stuck, it was in a lot of pain, and I couldn’t do certain things. I had to be careful when I bent my hand because it would stick.

After about the second treatment, the pain was gone and the sticking was gone.

Patient Update – August 3, 2026

Here’s an update on the chronic right ring finger trigger finger patient I’ve been sharing over the past several weeks.

After seven radial shockwave treatments, combined with a progressive home exercise program emphasizing tendon-gliding exercises, joint-locking techniques, and controlled tendon loading, she is now approximately 95% improved.

Her original symptoms—including pain over the A1 pulley, triggering, clicking, catching, and locking of the finger—have completely resolved. She now has essentially normal function of the finger.

The only remaining issue was a small amount of discomfort along the flexor tendon near the PIP joint, so we began treating that area with radial shockwave as well. After just one treatment to the PIP region, she returned today (August 3, 2026) reporting that the pain there was already approximately 90% improved. We performed her second treatment to that area today and will complete the remaining three planned treatments over the next few visits.

This patient was originally scheduled to undergo surgery, but based on her current progress, radial shockwave therapy combined with the appropriate exercise program has, in this case, essentially eliminated the need for surgical intervention.

Cases like this continue to reinforce what I’m seeing clinically: when combined with sound rehabilitation principles, radial shockwave therapy can be an incredibly valuable tool in the conservative management of chronic tendon disorders. While every patient responds differently and results cannot be guaranteed, this has been an exceptionally rewarding outcome to watch.

I’ll continue to provide updates as she completes her remaining treatments and reaches what I anticipate will be a full recovery.
