The Dirty Dozen: What You Should Know!
Not all produce carries the same level of pesticide residue. Each year, the Environmental Working Group releases the “Dirty Dozen” — a list of fruits and vegetables that tend to test highest for pesticide residues, even after washing.
These commonly include:
* Strawberries
* Spinach
* Kale
* Grapes
* Peaches
* Pears
* Apples
* Bell peppers
* Cherries
* Blueberries
* Green beans
* Nectarines
The biggest concern?
Many of these foods have thin, edible skins that can absorb or hold onto pesticides more easily.
That doesn’t mean you should avoid them. Fruits and vegetables are still essential for good health. The key is being smart about how you shop and prep them.
Here’s the strategy:
* Wash all produce thoroughly under running water
* Scrub firm produce when possible
* Prioritize organic options for Dirty Dozen items if your budget allows
* Don’t stress over perfection — eating produce matters more than eating none at all
Think of the Dirty Dozen as a guide for where organic purchases may make the biggest impact, not a reason to fear your food!
