Sydney doctors are using MRI-guided cryoablation to destroy certain tumors without traditional surgery. This minimally invasive technique uses real-time MRI guidance to precisely place a thin probe into a tumor, where extreme cold freezes and destroys abnormal tissue while helping spare surrounding healthy structures.
How it works:

Because the procedure requires only a small skin puncture rather than open surgery, many patients experience less pain, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. It may be an option for selected tumors in patients who are not good candidates for conventional surgery or when preserving nearby healthy tissue is especially important.
While MRI-guided cryoablation is an exciting advance, it is not suitable for every type of cancer or every patient. Doctors carefully determine who may benefit based on the tumor’s size, location, and type, and the procedure may be used alone or alongside other cancer treatments.
