A new clinical trial at Brown University Health could open the door to another option for patients facing peritoneal carcinomatosis, a cancer that spreads to the lining of the abdomen.

Brown Health has received FDA clearance to begin a Phase 1 trial of an investigational immunotherapy for peritoneal carcinomatosis. Dr. Khaldoun Almhanna will lead the trial, which is coordinated through the Brown University Oncology Research Group.

Clinical trials like this give patients access to emerging therapies and help researchers learn more about how to treat complex cancers.

Rhode Island has confirmed its second case of Powassan virus this year, prompting state health officials to remind residents to take precautions against tick exposure by avoiding brushy areas and high grass, and wearing long pants and long sleeves along with insect repellent if going outdoors. Check for ticks and shower after spending time in wooded or grassy areas.

While Powassan remains rare, it can cause serious neurological illness. With no specific treatment or vaccine, prevention and early awareness remain especially important.

Rhode Island's decision to continue the Eat Well, Be Well program will help more than 140,000 SNAP recipients afford fresh fruits and vegetables for another year. Expanding access to nutritious food is one way communities can help reduce the long-term burden of chronic disease and improve health outcomes.
