Wound Healing Foundation

The Wound Healing Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving wound healing world-wide. These guidelines are freely available to anyone.

The inability of wounds, scars and adhesions to heal normally is a major health problem in the United States as well as globally. As the population ages, the magnitude of chronic wound problems will increase. The Foundation raises public awareness, understanding and funds to support research for wound healing problems in collaboration and coordination with the Society. The Wound Healing Foundation

is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors composed of leaders in academia, private practice and industry devoted to wound healing problems and by people affected by problems associated with wounds and scarring. The Foundation funded the creation of wound healing guidelines for acute wounds, chronic wounds and prevention of wounds by best practices and evidence. The Foundation presents yearly research fellowship awards to outstanding scientists and is positioned to expand its research program through additional small grants and young investigator awards. Although chronic wounds affect approximately 6.5 million people in the United States, relatively few clinicians and researchers focus specifically on wound healing. There is great need for creating awards for the career development of young investigators so they may reach a point where they can obtain independent funding. Future plans for specific career development activities geared to WHS members are underway. Patients and caregivers do not always have access to wound healing specialists. The Foundation in conjunction with the Society are drafting user friendly information. Successful wound care is a team effort and the patients and their families have a major role in healing their wound. The partnership between the Wound Healing Foundation and the Wound Healing Society is an ongoing cooperative venture for developing society resources to accomplish a vital educational and charitable mission: to advance the science and practice of wound healing in the United States and throughout the world. Through the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations, the Foundation is committed to innovation and excellence as the expanding needs unfold in the 21st century.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing a public meeting on Patient-Focused Drug Development for Nonhealing Chronic Wounds. The hybrid public meeting will be held both online and in-person at FDA’s campus in Silver Spring, Maryland on Tuesday, August 25th, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.

A Note from the Wound Healing Foundation’s Outgoing Chair Margaret Halstead

To the Wound Community:

It is with deep gratitude and excitement that I reflect on the numerous accomplishments of the past year as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Wound Healing Foundation. The dedication and involvement of the Board of Directors is unsurpassed. The entire Board is committed to pursuing the Foundation’s mission of awareness and education while continuing our efforts to publish and fund research. More importantly, the tireless work is building on a solid foundation that will enhance the bold legacy of the WHF and its impact on the wound community.

I am thankful to the Board of Directors who volunteer, step up, and fill in when changes happen. This teamwork with a unified purpose allows the Foundation to move forward without missing a beat. I am confident that in 2026, when I turn over the reins to Sissi Miao, she will take the WHF to greater heights and achievements.

We are proud of making progress in our journey to serve the broader wound healing community. During this past year we’ve:

- The Management of Infected Wounds Consensus Document is undergoing the peer review process to continue professional education efforts
- Hosted Dr. Anish Konkar from Astra-Zeneca as the 14th annual Hunt Lecturer at the Diabetic Limb Salvage with Wound Healing Foundation Meeting. His research topic of GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon biology and its effect on obesity and wound healing was fascinating.
- We awarded ~ $51k for research to further wound healing science
- We supported a no-cost wound healing clinic for better patient care for underserved patients
- Increased our social media presence

Our accomplishments are laying a foundational groundwork for this coming year's mission goals. We plan to continue empowering the wound healing community and enhancing the lives of those it serves. It has been an honor to lead the WHF. - Margaret
