A correct remedy can still be given in a potency that is stronger than the patient requires. When the remedy is right but the reaction is intense, the lesson may not be to change the remedy, but to learn the patient's level of sensitivity.

Clinical maturity lies not only in selecting the correct remedy, but also in choosing the gentlest potency capable of producing cure.

Teaching Pearl

When a patient reports substantial improvement in mental state, vitality, functioning, and physical generals, the remaining suffering may reflect an unresolved life circumstance rather than an active disease state. A father separated from his children should still grieve; a remedy is not meant to make him indifferent to loss.

The temptation to prescribe again should be resisted when the overall direction is clearly positive. Wait until improvement has genuinely plateaued or relapse has occurred before considering repetition. In successful cases, patience is often the most difficult prescription for the homeopath.

The chief complaint tells us why the patient came. The characteristic symptoms tell us what remedy the patient needs.

Today I saw a new patient, a 75-year-old woman whose chief complaint was dizziness of many decades' duration. She had suffered from lifelong motion sickness, vertigo, and increasing dizziness with movement of the head and eyes.

Had I focused exclusively on the vertigo, I might have spent my time comparing vestibular remedies. Instead, the case opened through seemingly unrelated symptoms: a strong craving for salt, chronic constipation since youth, weeping only when alone, longstanding hurt from estranged brothers, difficulty forgiving, and an inability to urinate or pass stool when others were nearby.

These symptoms revealed the person behind the pathology. Once the patient became visible, the remedy became visible as well.

The disease was dizziness. The patient was something far more specific.

The patient received a single dose of Natrum muriaticum 200C and will be followed closely.

Teaching Pearl: A patient who is processing the past is very different from a patient who is living in the past. The former is often moving toward health; the latter may still be imprisoned by disease.
