Some babies do perfectly well falling asleep in one place and waking up somewhere else. For others, that change in their environment can make waking up much more disruptive.

Think about it from your baby’s perspective: they fall asleep with one set of surroundings, and when they wake between sleep cycles, something is different.

For some babies, falling asleep and waking in a consistent sleep environment may help those nighttime transitions feel less disruptive. For others, it may not make much difference at all.

And that distinction matters, because there isn’t one sleep strategy that works for every baby.

When I work with families during sleep consults, I’m not looking at one habit in isolation. We look at your baby’s sleep environment, routines, feeding, schedule, development, and what’s actually happening during those nighttime wakes.

Then we build a personalized strategy around your baby and your family β€” rather than trying to make your baby fit into a generic sleep plan you found online.

If you’re waking at 3 a.m. with a wide-awake, crying baby and wondering what you’re missing, you don’t have to keep guessing. Sometimes a small adjustment helps. Other times, we need to look more closely at the bigger picture.

A white noise machine, when used correctly, can be an excellent tool πŸ› οΈ for helping your baby learn healthy sleep hygiene πŸ’€.
Protecting our children's hearing πŸ‘‚ is important, so I don't say the 50 decibel max lightly. But how do you know what 50 decibels sounds like? Several free apps are available that you can download to do a quick easy check to make sure you don't have your white noise machine too loud.
The one I use is the NIOSH app (only available for iPhone).
Others are:
πŸ”Š Decibel Pro (iPhone only)
πŸ”Š Decibel X (iPhone and Android)
πŸ”Š Sound Meter (Android Only)
All of these are going to have some margin of error but they are all good enough to give you a ballpark to make sure you are within a safe range πŸ‘ with your white noise machines at home. They are also useful on the go if you are attending an event ⚾ and aren't sure if it's too loud for your baby and you need to pull out those oh-so-cute gigantic earphones 🎧!
Did you use a white noise machine with your baby? What is your favorite setting? (I personally love the rain storm)

Keeping your baby's sleep space at an ideal temperature 🌑️ is important for their safety πŸ›Ÿ. Overheating at night is a known risk factor for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
πŸ‘ΆBabies, especially those under 3 months old, cannot yet fully regulate their body temperature 🌑️. It is our responsibility to dress them appropriately and keep the room at a safe temperature for their sleep.
If you want to learn more about the science behind safe infant sleep, book a consult πŸ‘©β€πŸ’» with me or take one of my Infant Sleep Workshops πŸ‘©β€πŸ«! If you are struggling with sleep, I am here to help🀝.

Nurse Practitioners are amazing ✨
There are over 450,000 NPs in the US and they perform nearly 1 BILLION (with a B!) patient visits a year. The Nurse Practitioner is the fastest growing πŸ“ˆ Primary Care Provider and a significant part of the solution to healthcare access in America.
For the last 3 years, the US News & World Report Jobs Ranking has put Nurse Practitioners in the Number 1 πŸ₯‡spot overall as well as top ranking in the categories of Health Care and STEM.
Nurses and Nurse Practitioners hold a position of trust 🀝 in the community and based on Gallup polling we have held it at the highest level for more than two decades.
The Nurse Practitioner role was birthed right here in Colorado πŸ”οΈ in 1965 by a Public Health Nurse named Loretta Ford. She saw a need in underserved populations and knew that nurses were well-positioned to do something about it. The rest is history.
Nurse Practitioners deliver first-rate patient care that is having a significant impact in our current medical climate.
I am proud to be a part of this expanding and highly-respected community.
