🎀 TEACHING TUESDAY: Breast Health & Cancer Screening 💗
Happy Teaching Tuesday! 💚
Our provider is out of the office today, so we won’t have our usual Teaching Tuesday video. But that doesn’t mean we’re skipping the education!
Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s talk about something incredibly important — breast health and early detection!
💗 Did you know?
🎀 Breast cancer doesn’t always cause a lump. Changes in breast size or shape, skin dimpling, ni**le inversion, unusual ni**le discharge, or persistent changes in the breast should also be evaluated.
🎀 You don’t have to have a family history to develop breast cancer. Many women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known family history of the disease.
🎀 Mammograms can detect changes before you can feel them. That’s why routine screening is so important, even when you feel perfectly healthy.
🎀 When should screening start? The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammograms every 2 years beginning at age 40 through age 74 for women at average risk. Some organizations recommend annual screening beginning at age 40, so talk with your healthcare provider about what’s right for you.
🎀 Know what’s normal for YOUR body. Being familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel can help you recognize changes. You don’t have to perform a formal monthly self-exam, but don’t ignore something new or unusual!
💚 A functional, whole-person approach to breast health also means looking at lifestyle factors that can influence risk, including physical activity, alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight, and overall metabolic health.
And remember, while healthy lifestyle habits can help reduce certain risks, they do NOT replace recommended cancer screenings.
Early detection can save lives. Don’t wait until something feels wrong to prioritize your breast health.
