Our decisions around child spacing and our babies’ age gaps are personal and multifaceted. There are general recommendations about ideal inter-pregnancy intervals (the time between birth of one baby to getting pregnant again) being no less than 18 months and no greater than 5 years - but the health outcomes we see at either end of that spectrum are just as nuanced as the choice itself.
What we do know for sure is that pregnancy and breastfeeding demand a lot from your body, and there are specific things that we can do to support ourselves to be as healthy as possible during our baby-making years. So if you want to pop out your babies back-to-back and build your very own basketball team from scratch, get it girl 💁🏻♀️ But you’d better be on your game in the process!
Here are my non-negotiables when it comes to avoiding nutrient depletion, preventing pain and discomfort, and supporting a healthy postpartum going into another pregnancy:
🥩 Prioritize high protein and fat, preferably from animal sources, and warm foods (soups, stews, broths).
🍏 Avoid raw or cold foods (salads, smoothies). Consider limiting gluten and dairy as well.
💊 Consider supplementing with these: Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin D, Omega-3s, Choline, and B Vitamins
🏋🏻♀️ Get strong AF. No seriously. Start picking up heavy s**t and putting it back down, repeatedly. Strength training has proven benefits for both mom and baby, and is safe to begin in pregnancy even without previous experience. Your back, pelvis, and core will thank you for the focus on strength and stability when carrying babies close together.
💆🏻♀️ Make a concerted effort to care for your nervous system. I say this knowing it’s a big ask for a mom of multiple littles. But your babies are being wired off of your nervous system beginning in the womb. Get a massage, see a Webster certified chiro, make a pelvic PT appointment, take the Epsom salt bath with the bathroom door locked, download a meditation app and listen while you’re going to bed. YOU are worth prioritizing, and yes, even spending money and time on.
