Conditions That Can Delay Healing

Some health conditions make wound healing harder, including:
• Diabetes
• PAD (poor circulation)
• Lymphedema
• Autoimmune disease
• Immobility
• Cancer
• Organ failure

Treating the cause is just as important as treating the wound.

🛏️ PART 1 of our 4-Part Series on Support Surfaces

Support surfaces are a core intervention — not an accessory — in pressure injury prevention and healing.

When selected correctly, they help:✔️ Redistribute pressure✔️ Reduce shear✔️ Manage microclimate (heat + moisture)✔️ Improve local tissue perfusion

But remember: support surfaces do NOT replace repositioning, offloading, or clinical judgment.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🔍 The 2026 Shift: Think PERFORMANCE, Not PRODUCT

Three key mechanisms matter most:

1️⃣ ImmersionThe body sinks into the mattress surface.

2️⃣ EnvelopmentThe surface conforms around the body to spread load over a larger area and reduce focal pressure.

3️⃣ Microclimate ManagementControl of heat + moisture at the skin interface.

If these three factors are not optimized, the surface will fail the patient.

⚠️ Important Clinical Reminder:Even with a support surface mattress, heels should still be “floated.” This is commonly overlooked when using bed support surface technology.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🛏️ Two Main Support Surface Categories:

🔹 Reactive SurfacesRespond to patient loadExamples: foam, static air, low air loss

🔹 Active SurfacesMechanically change pressure distributionExamples: alternating pressure systems
