Okay, technically cannabis and hops are related—but still.

🌿 Cannabis sativa
🍺 Humulus lupulus (hops)

Both belong to the Cannabaceae family.

Yep. The plant associated with your IPA and the plant associated with your dispensary run are botanical cousins. 😂

But here's where it gets interesting: despite being relatives, they've developed very different chemistry and very different effects on the human body.

Cannabis produces cannabinoids like THC and CBD that interact with our endocannabinoid system. Hops bring their own unique plant compounds to the party—and your beer.

🧬 Same family.
🌱 Different chemistry.
🧠 VERY different experience.

Basically: cousins, not twins. One went to the brewery. The other went to the dispensary. 😂🌿🍺

This resonates with me—not because research has established cannabis as a treatment for ADHD, because it hasn't.

But there is research showing that some people with ADHD report using cannabis to self-regulate and perceive reductions in things like hyperactivity, impulsivity, anxiety, and that constant internal restlessness. The objective evidence is much more mixed, and cannabis can also impair attention, memory, and executive function.

For me, though, “turning the volume down” is exactly how I describe my experience.

It was never really about getting high. My neurodivergent brain is loud. Multiple thoughts, ideas, plans, sensory input, unfinished tasks, and internal conversations can all be competing for attention at the same time. Cannabis didn't magically make my brain work “better”—it made everything feel quieter.

And I think that's an important distinction: a person's subjective benefit can be real even when science hasn't yet established it as an effective treatment.

We need more research on cannabis and neurodivergence—not assumptions in either direction.

🧠🌿 Could cannabinoids help protect the brain?

Emerging research suggests that cannabinoids—including CBD and other compounds found in Cannabis sativa—may support neuroprotective processes by reducing neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, two biological mechanisms associated with neuronal injury and neurodegenerative disorders.

Scientists have identified several pathways through which cannabinoids may influence brain health, including:

🔹 Reduction of reactive oxygen species (oxidative stress)
🔹 Support of cellular homeostasis
🔹 Protection of neurons in experimental models of neurological injury and disease

Research published in recent years has highlighted CBD’s potential neuroprotective effects in conditions involving neuroinflammation, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative processes, although more human clinical studies are still needed.

Cannabis isn't for everyone—and that's okay. 🌿

One of the biggest myths about cannabis is that it's either completely harmless or the answer to every health concern. The reality is that there are situations where caution is appropriate—and times when cannabis may not be the right choice at all.

Examples include: • Pregnancy or breastfeeding • Adolescents (except in certain medically supervised situations) • A personal or strong family history of psychosis • Certain heart conditions • Potential medication interactions • Driving or operating heavy machinery while impaired

Evidence-based cannabis education means talking about both the potential benefits and the potential risks. Because the best decisions are informed decisions.

🧠 Why is cannabis overdose considered extremely unlikely?

The answer lies in the brain.

The brainstem, which controls breathing and cardiovascular function, contains very few CB1 cannabinoid receptors. Because cannabinoids interact primarily with these receptors, they do not significantly suppress respiration.

In contrast, opioids act on receptors that are highly concentrated in the brainstem, which is why opioid overdose can stop breathing.

🌿 This difference in receptor distribution is a key reason why fatal overdose from cannabis alone has not been documented in scientific literature.

Understanding the endocannabinoid system helps clinicians better evaluate both the safety and therapeutic potential of cannabinoids.
