www.RitaBrewer.com From a young age, I knew I was called to a career in medicine.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Geneseo and completed my Physician Assistant training at Cornell University Medical College. I bring over 34 years of clinical experience in obesity medicine, surgical specialties, conventional medicine, integrative care, and functional medicine. Throughout my career, I treated the most severe complications of poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, including non-healing ulcers, vascular disease requiring bypass surgery, chronic wound infections, amputations, strokes, dementia, and heart attacks. I cared for patients who were blind, on dialysis, or living with diabetes-related amputations. These experiences permanently shaped my approach to healthcare. Over time, I came to a sobering realization: much of this suffering was preventable. Patients were rarely taught how to improve metabolic health, address insulin resistance, or use food and lifestyle as powerful medical tools. This realization led me to become board certified in Lifestyle Medicine and dedicate my career to addressing the root causes of chronic disease rather than simply managing symptoms. I have since witnessed, repeatedly and firsthand, how evidence-based lifestyle interventions can help reverse or dramatically improve type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, and other chronic metabolic disorders. Because lifestyle-based, root-cause care is often missing from conventional healthcare, I opened my own clinic to support patients with chronic metabolic conditions through comprehensive Lifestyle, Obesity, and Functional Medicine. My clinic serves patients in Raleigh, North Carolina, and via telemedicine for patients across North Carolina, offering a personalized and supportive approach to long-term metabolic health. Each patient receives an individualized care plan that may include nutrition therapy, physical activity guidance, sleep optimization, stress management, behavior change coaching, lab testing and medical therapy when indicated. I use tools such as continuous glucose monitoring to provide real-time insight and data-driven personalization, empowering patients to understand how their body responds to food, movement, stress, and sleep. When appropriate, I also support patients using GLP-1 medications and other anti obesity medications as part of a comprehensive metabolic health strategy, always emphasizing sustainable lifestyle change and long-term success. My treatment plans improves insulin sensitivity, reduce medication dependence when appropriate, achieve sustainable weight loss, and restore energy and vitality. My mission is to educate, equip, and empower patients to reclaim their health and live free from preventable chronic disease. It would be my honor and privilege to partner with you on your journey to optimal metabolic health.

We Were Created to Move

From the very beginning…

God placed Adam in a garden to work it and care for it.

📖 Genesis 2:15-16

“Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;”

Purposeful work.
Daily movement.
Fresh food.
Connection with God’s creation.

These were all part of God’s original design.

Modern life makes us sit more than ever.

Today, find a way to move with purpose.

Your body was designed for it.

Are You Still Running on Sugar?

What if your body could become better at burning its own stored fat for energy instead of constantly relying on carbohydrates?

That’s where ketones and metabolic flexibility come in.

Ketones are produced when your body shifts toward using fat for fuel. Your heart and brain can use ketones as an efficient energy source—and improving your ability to access fat for fuel can be an important part of improving metabolic health.

You can encourage your body to make more ketones by:

🥑 Reducing sugar and refined carbohydrates
Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods that help stabilize blood sugar and insulin.

⏰ Creating a consistent eating window
Even a simple 12-hour overnight fast can help your body begin shifting toward fat burning.

🚶 Moving more throughout the day
Walking, strength training, and regular exercise can improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic flexibility.

But here’s the important part…

You don’t have to follow a strict ketogenic diet to improve your metabolic health.

The goal isn’t simply to “get into ketosis.” The bigger goal is to help your body become metabolically flexible—better able to switch between burning glucose and fat for energy.

If you’re struggling with weight loss resistance, insulin resistance, prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes, stubborn belly fat, or low energy, your metabolism may need more than another diet.

That’s where I can help.

Through personalized Lifestyle, Obesity, and Functional Medicine, I work with you to identify the factors standing between you and better metabolic health—and create a practical plan you can actually sustain.

Wisdom Leads to Better Health

Good health doesn’t happen by accident.

It grows through wisdom.

📖 Proverbs 4:7 tells us to get wisdom.

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: And with all thy getting get understanding.”
‭‭
📖 Hosea 4:6 reminds us that lack of knowledge has consequences.

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.”
‭‭
Learn how food affects blood sugar.
Learn why sleep matters.
Learn how movement heals.

God gave us minds to learn and bodies to steward.

Never stop growing.

Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: And with all thy getting get understanding.
