WHAT CAUSES PSORIASIS?

Psoriasis is a chronic disease characterized by skin inflammation and scaling. Although the disease occurs in all age groups it primarily affects adults. More than five million adults live with the disease and it appears about equally in both males and females. Psoriasis is a disorder driven by the immune system and involves a type of white blood cell known as T cells. Normally, I cells help protect the body against infection and disease. With psoriasis, T cells are triggered by mistake and become so active that they start unnecessary immune responses. These immune responses cause inflammation and rapid turnover of skin cells. Researchers have identified genes linked to the disease and in many cases, there is a family history of the disease.

People with psoriasis may experience periods of time when their symptoms are worse than others (called flares). Conditions that may cause flares include infections, stress and changes in climate. Certain medications including beta-blockers (prescribed for high blood pressure) and lithium may also cause an outbreak or worsen psoriasis. Some people who live with psoriasis may notice that lesions will appear where the skin has experienced trauma such as a cut, scratch, sunburn or an infection.

BACK TO SCHOOL HEALTH INFORMATION

Head Lice

Head lice are wingless insects that spend their entire lives on the human scalp and feed exclusively on blood. An adult louse is about the size of a sesame seed. The eggs, called nits, are even smaller and are roughly the size of a knot in a thread. Lice and nits are easiest to detect at the neckline and behind the ears. Head lice are extremely contagious. Close contact and sharing personal belongings, such as clothing, hats or hairbrushes, puts people at risk. Anyone can get head lice but families with children ages 3-11 are more likely to become infected. Personal hygiene has nothing to do with getting head lice. Head lice do not spread disease. Some symptoms of head lice include a ticking feeling in the hair, frequent itching and sores from scratching. Head lice are most active at night so those affected may experience irritability and difficulty sleeping.

Treatment for head lice is recommended for people with active infestation. All family members and close contacts should be checked and treated if necessary. Those with lice and their bedmates should be treated at the same time.
