Prevent Blindness NC

Prevent Blindness NC We prevent blindness and preserve sight through direct services and programs, education and advocacy.

Prevent Blindness North Carolina is the only agency in North Carolina dedicated solely to saving sight and preventing blindness. Organized in 1967 as a non-profit health agency and independent affiliate of Prevent Blindness America (founded 1908), PBNC has been serving some of the neediest and most at-risk populations of the state for 50 years. PBNC helps prevent vision loss by working within comm

unities to provide screenings, trainings, and access to follow-up resources. Through direct service programs, PBNC reaches over 570,000 people (predominantly children), and links financially needy people to more than $450,000 worth of free and discounted eye care annually.

Lucas got his glasses after following up with a doctor after his PBNC Vision Screening, and it is another reminder of why vision screenings are so important. He’s noticing things he never saw before, and just seems so much more confident. He keeps talking about how much he loves that he can see better now! A simple screening can make a big difference. 👓💙

We recently saw how life‑changing a simple screening can be. After getting glasses, this little learner can finally see up close without squinting, isn’t mixing up letters and numbers as often, and is staying more focused during learning time.

When kids can see clearly, they can learn, participate, and feel more confident in the classroom. Early vision checks truly make a difference.

Let’s make sure every child gets the chance to see their world clearly.

Meet one of our amazing School-Aged Success Stories from Cherokee County, NC! 🎉 We're thrilled to share the incredible journey of a student who went from struggling to thriving, all thanks to a simple yet life-changing intervention. 🙌 A student was screened by a PBNC-certified vision screener working in the school system, and then referred to the eye doctor for a further examination, which led to a game-changing diagnosis.

His teacher later reported that the student's iReady performance scores increased by a whopping 49 points after he got glasses! 📈 This remarkable improvement is a testament to the power of early intervention and the importance of prioritizing our children's eye health. 👓 By catching vision problems early, we can unlock a world of possibilities for our young learners. 🌟

A School-Aged Success story submitted to us from Cumberland County

"A student was referred for follow-up examination after the school’s vision screenings. After receiving his glasses, he had a hard time remembering to bring them to school or wearing them when he did. Together the school staff and I were able to encourage him enough to have him consistently wear his glasses, that's when his teacher really started to notice a difference. His teacher also showed me the differences between his handwriting at the beginning of the year to right before school ended. The examples she showed me went from having big, overcrowded handwriting with incomplete sentences to typical second grade handwriting with complete thoughts and phrases.

He was a shy child in the classroom and mostly kept to himself, including during recess but by the end of the year he had made a little group of friends who would also occasionally call out to him "Bring your glasses so we can play!" I am overjoyed that the vision screening made such an impact on that student."

Vision screenings for preschoolers are truly life‑changing. Catching issues early can make all the difference. Lydia is the perfect example. A simple screening helped save her sight, giving her the chance to learn and grow without barriers. If you have a little one, consider getting their eyes checked. Early action matters more than most people realize. 👓💛

👀✨ Why Pre-K Vision Screenings Matter ✨👀
When children struggle to see clearly, everyday tasks and classroom learning can feel overwhelming. However, with early vision screenings, challenges can be identified before they hinder a child's development.

Early detection makes all the difference. Pre-K vision screenings help ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive in school, build friendships, and develop the skills they need for a lifetime of success.

👉 Help us spread the word: vision screenings aren’t just about eyesight—they’re about unlocking a child’s full potential.
