Now, let’s look at Step 2: Passive immunization.

How does this work?

It works by giving you immediate protection against the rabies virus at the wound site. Timely administration of HRIG (human rabies immunoglobulin) provides this protection against rabies in unvaccinated individuals.

Have you ever heard of PEP?

PEP stands for postexposure prophylaxis, which are the steps taken after a possible rabies exposure.

Step 1: Thorough wound washing and flushing.

Why does this matter?

Cleaning the wound with soap and water (and/or virucidal agents) helps reduce the amount of virus at the site.
