We don't have a ton of research around race/ethnicity and Graves' disease, but there are a few studies of interest:

📌 In a large study of U.S. active duty military personnel, McLeod et. al. found that Black and Asian/Pacific Islander service members had elevated risk of Graves' disease. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/1860451

📌 A 2020 study (Maduka et. al) that followed patients undergoing surgical thyroidectomy for causes other than thyroid cancer found a greater incidence of neck hematoma and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury for Black patients and an increased incidence of RLN injury for Asian patients. 📌 Gulde et. al. have reported on thyrotoxic periodic paralysis, a rare complication that can affect Asian men, with increasing awareness in recent years of the risk in Hispanic men. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36710091/

Another thyroid medication recall - this one for a desiccated thyroid extract product from Vitruvias Therapeutics that is potentially "superpotent" (contains too much active ingredient). This link from the FDA has more info and a photo of the product label:

AUBURN, Ala. (August 21, 2026) – Vitruvias Therapeutics, Inc. is voluntarily recalling one lot (Lot. No. 504950) of Thyroid Tablets, USP 30 mg to the consumer level. The product is being recalled because testing confirmed the potential for the product to be superpotent.
