20 Years and Counting

NHR is a place that curates the dreams and passions of horse lovers of all ages. Joy and Brian gave life to my passion for horses at a young age and set me up for my now active and successful career in horse training and showing. They understand the true impact of equine connection and the emotional healing it brings to so many. NHR is a window of opportunity for aspiring horse lovers and a therapeutic resource for their surrounding community and the next generation of horsemen. Their selfless service and commitment to the equine experience is a treasure for all those who get the pleasure of experiencing it with them.

What else do you want to know about Zep? Let us know!

🩵 Zep is a miniature horse.

🩵 Zep has been working on a diet this year so that we can manage his Cushing's disease (a metabolic disorder), and he is on special medication. Horses, just like humans, all have different dietary and medical needs, and we cater to each of them as individuals!

🩵 He serves in the giddy up & read program and will eventually serve in EAL and retreats! He also LOVES coffee! ☕️

Today's Story of Hope comes to us from Mrs. Tyner, Central Heights Kindergarten teacher and parent.

Spending time at the horse ranch has been a truly meaningful experience for my students and for me. Through equestrian-assisted learning, my students have been given opportunities far beyond their everyday routines. They’ve experienced empathy, connection, and confidence in a unique environment. It has also been powerful for my own daughter, who has learned firsthand how resilience, patience, and a calm spirit can help you overcome challenges and grow stronger.

We have been fortunate to have witnessed the impact NHR has had on many individuals for 16 years now, when our daughter started volunteering there. Through her eyes and three granddaughters' eyes, we have witnessed the balance between horse, riders and family. The commitment that NHR has to MANY individuals that come through the program and in turn the commitment riders have to NHR is heartwarming. In this world with so many negatives, giving the individuals a chance to see positive outcomes by reaching goals and embracing the ABILITIES they DO have with a “you CAN do it” attitude has a huge impact on kids and adults of many backgrounds. Keep it up NHR TEAM!

I enjoyed my time at NHR due to the passion and commitment you have for giving to others. The opportunities that are available through NHR help people make connections with horses, which can be a powerful tool, creating confidence, empathy, strength, and much more.

"I believe NHR holds the true power and meaning of “one more chance”. Whether you are needing assistance in finding your passion again or if you need the mental and cognitive skills, NHR has it all. I believe the horses have helped me in more ways than I can count, specifically in finding myself again. From when I was a little girl, I have always struggled with “finding” my way around life, and entering teen years, I relied on the horses every week in helping primarily my mental health. The staff at NHR have helped with teaching me all the ways about horses and horsemanship. I will forever believe that this ranch helped me find my “hope” and “passion”. There’s always a second chance to try something new or go out of your comfort zone!!!!"

You know you have an awesome Equine Manager when she gives up her birthday to come instruct our staff and work horses!

Ashely is amazing, her horse knowledge and keen awareness to the horses needs, personalities and learning patterns blesses all our participants and our volunteers and staff. She is always a ray of sunshine in our day and we are blessed to have her on our team!

Help us wish a Happy Birthday to Ashley! Drop your wishes in the comments! 👇

Wow her words capture the essence of our work so perfectly!

This is exactly our goal for everyone at NHR - from therapeutic riding to summer camp, from New Heights school program to adult retreats, we want EVERYONE to believe in the very core of their being that they CAN DO HARD THINGS! What a blessing it is to stand beside the participants as the horses help them discover more about themselves every day!

💛I’m Going to Let Your Child Struggle 💛

When your child comes for lessons with me, I’m going to let them struggle sometimes.

They may have never fastened a buckle on a piece of tack. A saddle might be heavy and awkward. Their lead rope may be a tangled mess. And something that would take me ten seconds might take them five minutes.

I’m not going to immediately step in and do it for them. *Unless its a safety issue.*

Because someday, I want your child to walk into the barn, catch their own horse, tack up, and head out feeling completely confident in their own abilities.

Why?

Because they’re learning that they can do hard things.

So yes, I’ll help when something is beyond a child's physical ability. I’ll encourage, demonstrate, and keep them safe.

But when they *can* do it? I’m going to give them the time to fumble with the buckle. Untangle the rope. Try again. And figure it out.

Parents, I know watching that can be hard. You’ll want to jump in and make it easier.

But sometimes the greatest gift we can give a child is not making the hard thing easier.

It’s standing beside them long enough for them to discover:

“I can do this myself.”

💙 ~Abbie
