PRESS RELEASE: OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING UPDATE: SERGEANT ZACH BURNS

DATE: 06102026

On Monday, June 8th, 2026, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office received a call for a man with a gun in Baggs, Wyoming, near the Colorado state line.

Sergeant Zach Burns was in the area and responded immediately. Dispatchers relayed the suspect vehicle information to Sergeant Burns.

Sergeant Burns located the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in front of a small apartment complex in Baggs.

Upon coming to a stop, the suspect immediately exited his vehicle and opened fire on Sergeant Burns with a semi-automatic rifle. Sergeant Burns was struck in the neck, arm, and hip.

The suspect proceeded to set fire to the apartment building before getting back in his vehicle and fleeing northbound on Highway 789.

Residents of Baggs immediately rushed to provide aid to Sergeant Burns until EMS crews could arrive, providing cover and emergency wound treatment.

Sergeant Burns was transported via helicopter to a trauma center in Colorado where he remains in critical condition.

The suspect was killed in a shootout with Carbon County Deputies on Highway 789 after fleeing the scene. This investigation is ongoing and being conducted by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation.

Our hearts are with Sergeant Burns and his family, as well as all of our deputies, troopers, Baggs residents, and partner agencies who assisted.

Please keep all of them in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you.

-Alex

Out of network? Not a problem.

While we do accept most insurance companies, there are a couple that we do not contract with. A big one is United Healthcare (UHC). Many patients in the Rawlins area think that if they have UHC, they can't come see us, but that couldn't be further from the truth. We don't bill directly to UHC, but we are able to give you a receipt or "superbill" to send to your insurance, and they can reimburse you for your healthcare expenses. Many of our patients who have UHC have used this method with great success.

Even if you don't think you'll reach the deductible this year (and therefore would not be reimbursed), we HIGHLY recommend submitting a superbill to your insurance. That way, in the event that any unexpected medical expenses arise, you'll be covered.

If it all sounds overwhelming, we are more than happy to help you through the process.

Rawlins, let's talk about something people don't talk about enough: dizziness.

It's a common reason people see a doctor, and one of the most commonly undertreated. Why? Because vestibular therapy requires specialized training that not every clinic offers.

We do.

Whether it's BPPV (the crystals-in-your-ear thing, yes that's real), post-COVID dizziness, or balance changes from a neurologic condition, we have the tools and the training to help.

Steady steps. Real progress.

This is what one-on-one care can do when your therapist actually stays with you. No handoffs. No rush. Just focused treatment, real partnership, and a plan that makes sense.

Continuity matters. Especially when winter roads, balance issues, or pain make every mile feel longer.

Want care that feels personal, not corporate? Call Mobility Center of Wyoming.
