Signs we look for during a minors piercing appointment that means a child is ready:
Verbal Consent
• A child who is ready can express verbally that they want their ears pierced.
• They can repeat it consistently without changing their mind when asked again later.
• They don’t just agree because a parent or sibling wants them to, they show they personally want it.
Body Language
• Positive signs: Sitting still, leaning in, showing ears when asked to look, smiling, nodding, asking questions.
• Negative signs: Pulling away, crying, hiding, shaking their head “no,” covering the area, wont listen to simple directions
If their body is saying “no” (squirming, pulling away, tears) even if they say “yes” that means they’re not fully giving consent. It wouldnt be ethically or morally right to continue the service in this case.
Signs a Child Is Ready
• They can explain in their own words what’s happening and they understand its going to hurt a little bit.
• They show curiosity and excitement more then they show nervousness or fear.
• They can sit calmly through an anatomy check and cleaning.
• They ask questions like “Does it hurt?” or “How do I take care of it?” showing they understand it’s a responsibility.
Role of the Piercer
• A good piercer always double checks both verbal and body language consent.
• If a child looks unsure, they pause or stop, even if the parent is encouraging.
• The rule: No clear yes = no piercing.
After a few uncomfortable learning lessons--- Its important to me that I only pierce kids that I feel truly understand what piercing entails and are okay with it hurting a little bit. We even encourage parents to bring little ones in for a free walk through to see if they might be ready.
At the end of the day the worst case scenario is teaching your little one about consent even if they dont leave here with piercings. It proves youre a safe person for them 🖤
