Incase you don’t know- May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and this one hits a little closer to home for me this year.
Recently, I was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer. While basal cell carcinoma is typically slow-growing and highly treatable when caught early, it does involve a surgery to remove it- so identifying it when it is small and easier to remove is imperative!
As someone who grew up in the era of tanning beds, baby oil, Sun-In, and “a tan is healthy,” I wish I had known then what I know now.
Skin cancer doesn’t always look scary. It can show up as a small pearly bump, a sore that won’t heal, a pink patch, or a spot that simply looks different from the others.
The three most common types of skin cancer are:
☀️ Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) – The most common type. Usually slow-growing and rarely spreads, but can cause significant tissue damage if left untreated.
☀️ Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) – The second most common type. More aggressive than BCC and can spread if not treated.
☀️ Melanoma – The most dangerous form of skin cancer. While less common, it can spread quickly and become life-threatening if not detected early.
The good news? Early detection saves lives.
Please wear your sunscreen. Reapply it. Wear your hat. Protect your skin. And most importantly, schedule regular skin checks with a dermatologist or healthcare provider.
If something looks different, changes, itches, bleeds, or simply doesn’t seem right—get it checked.
Don’t wait.
Your future self will thank you.
