What exactly is when my lower back pain and upper back hurts?

08/30/2026

The erector spinae is a massive group of deep back muscles and tendons running vertically along both sides of your spine.

Because these muscles are highly active, they are the source of lower back pain and debilitating muscle spasms. Strains muscle due to poor posture, repetitive bending, or lifting heavy objects incorrectly without engaging the core.

Psoas and back pain...

The psoas muscle (pronounced “so-as”) plays a major role in posture, movement, and lower back stability and it’s often an overlooked cause of back pain.

The psoas is a deep core muscle that connects your lower spine (lumbar region) to your femur (thigh bone). It helps you lift your leg, stabilize your spine, and maintain proper hip alignment.

When the psoas becomes tight or shortened from sitting too long, stress, or poor posture it can pull on the lumbar spine, creating compression and tension that lead to lower back pain, hip pain, or even discomfort down the legs.

Conversely, a weak psoas can cause instability, forcing other muscles (like the lower back and hamstrings) to overwork and ache.

Relief tips:

Gentle hip flexor stretches and psoas release techniques can help lengthen the muscle.

Core strengthening and deep breathing exercises support proper alignment.

Massage therapy targeting the psoas, hips, and lower back can release deep tension and restore balance.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage is a traditional healing practice from Thailand that combines acupressure, deep stretching, yoga-like movements, and energy work to promote physical and mental well-being.

It's often called "Thai yoga massage" because the therapist uses their hands, thumbs, elbows, knees, and feet to guide the recipient through a series of assisted stretches, while also applying rhythmic pressure along the body's energy lines (called Sen lines)

No oil is usually used (unlike other types of massage). Unless combination with other styles.

The person receiving the thai massage usually stays fully clothed in loose, comfortable clothes. Unless combined with other styles then will be required to be undressed.

It typically takes place on a floor mat, not a table. But there is some of styles that can be performed on the table as well.

It can be energizing or deeply relaxing, depending on the style and pressure used.

Benefits:

-Improves flexibility and range of motion
-Reduces muscle tension and pain
-Enhances circulation and energy flow
-Supports relaxation, stress relief, and mental clarity

Thai massage is rooted in Ayurvedic medicine and Buddhist teachings, making it as much a spiritual practice as a physical one. It's commonly offered in spas, wellness centers, and traditional massage clinics, especially in Thailand.
