Usually when we feel guilty because we said "no" its actually not our own guilt.

Its us taking on the responsibility for other people's emotions.

This is not the same thing. Guilt is a negative feeling we get when we act out of alignment with our values. An oops I did something wrong. (Also not I'm bad)

This "guilt" we feel when we hold a boundary, is not actually guilt. Dr. Becky said this is actually us taking the bad emotion from someone else, because we feel like it'll be better if they dont feel bad. We can handle it for them.

This leaves us abandoning ourselves for someone else's comfort, which is definitely not ok. This leads to resentment.

Resentment let's us know when we're self-abandoning. And one of my biggest rules in life is "if I feel resentful, something has to change"

Resentment is absolutely not allowed in my life, because I refuse to abandon myself.

Other people get to have their emotions about my boundary, so I'll take the uncomfortable feeling over self-abandonment every time.

The yuck we feel after holding a boundary just might save our lives long term.

I remember when this finally sank in.

When the light bulb finally clicked.

I was in the middle of taking a shower (of course the best place for big ideas to come through, especially as a parent)

And I was like "OMG, it's on me. Like its actually all on me."

Now this wasn't taking on of other people's s**t or blaming myself in a harmful, self-depricating way.

This was like omg I let myself be treated this way. I chose to stay when I could have left. I chose not to have boundaries. I chose to keep saying yes when I really wanted to say no. I chose to push myself beyond when my body said no. This was all my fault.

ALL MY RESPONSIBILITY.

This is not victim blaming. Nor saying the people or circumstances didnt have their own part to play.

This is not gas lighting or bypassing.

This is not ignoring the facts, underlying beliefs, lack of resources that often kept me stuck.

The energy in this moment was like holy s**t I have so much power and choice in my life that I literally couldn't see before because I was so entangled in the mess.

And if I would have chosen something different I would have been somewhere experiencing something completely different.

I could not have gotten there with out the deep support of my therapist, my family, my dear friends, and lots of somatic and subconscious work to peel back those layers and disconnect from the mess.

This is the power of nervous system regulation and support. Because taking responsibility on its own is honestly not enough.

This is the work we aim to do with in the Inner Compass Journey.

To reclaim your sovereignty. To help you create, maintain, and strengthen your inner and outer resources. And to create a life that deeply holds and nourishes you, just as much as you do for those you love.

Tears happen on the table, in a good way, pretty regularly.

Not because I'm shoving my elbow into their painful muscles,

Because they felt safe enough to let go. To be present with their feelings. The ones that feel so big and vast and unholdable by yourself. And the ones that you've been pushing down for the last 20 years or more.

The container matters. You're nervous system safety matters. Your relationship with your practitioner MATTERS.

We heal in relationship with others. We weren't meant to do this alone.

So even when someone comes to me because they have a messed up shoulder or a back thats hurting, and even if emotions and stress aren't mentioned,

They're there. Waiting to be seen.

And held in loving care.
