For some, purging means self-induced vomiting. For others, it could be abusing laxatives or diuretics. While each behavior is different, all are serious signs that someone might be struggling with an eating disorder.

Interestingly, fewer than 10% of women with bulimia use more than one purging method. Most rely on just one—which can make it harder to recognize from the outside.

If you notice patterns like frequent trips to the bathroom after meals, overuse of medications, or secrecy around eating, it could be time to check in. Early recognition saves lives.

During Black History Month, it’s vital to highlight an often-overlooked issue: eating disorders, including bulimia nervosa, disproportionately affect BIPOC individuals—yet they are frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated in these communities.

Studies show that Black and Hispanic teenagers are more likely than their White peers to engage in binging and purging behaviors. However, systemic barriers like stigma, lack of culturally-competent care, and limited access to resources often prevent BIPOC individuals from seeking or receiving proper treatment. 💔

We must advocate for inclusive eating disorder treatment and research that reflects the diverse experiences of those impacted. Increasing awareness and access to care for BIPOC individuals is not just necessary—it’s crucial.

Together, we can break the stigma and create a future where everyone has the support they need to heal. 🙏✨
