The Beach Cities Health District (BCHD) Board of Directors voted Wednesday evening to authorize the Chief Executive Officer to execute an Agreement to Enter into a Ground Lease with Sunrise Senior Living, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing redevelopment of BCHD’s former South Bay Hospital site as part of its Healthy Living Campus initiative.

The proposed agreement follows an extensive, multi-year planning and public engagement process focused on reimagining the former hospital building at 514 N. Prospect Avenue into a community-centered wellness destination that supports the entire community with healthy aging, intergenerational connection and long-term financial sustainability for the health district.

Thank you to everyone who joined the Beach Cities Partnership for Youth Coalition meeting on May 20, 2026, at allcove Beach Cities. We were excited to welcome more than 40 participants, including elected officials, school administrators, parents, mental health and substance use providers, BCHD staff, and a strong showing of young people representing our Youth Advisory Council.

This meeting was largely planned and co-led by youth members, highlighting the power of youth voice and leadership within the Coalition.

During the meeting, we shared updates on allcove Beach Cities’ future permanent home, reviewed recent youth health indicators and cannabis policy updates, and heard directly from students through a youth-led fishbowl discussion on substance use and mental health.

The conversation focused on several key themes and action areas:

Starting prevention earlier by introducing conversations around mental health and substance use at younger ages.

Expanding peer-to-peer support and creating more opportunities for youth-led initiatives and mentorship.

Strengthening communication and trust between young people and adults so youth feel safe asking for support when needed.

Thank you again to everyone who contributed to such a thoughtful and collaborative discussion. Together, we continue working toward a healthier, safer, and more connected community for Beach Cities youth.
