Did you know that if you're overweight, losing weight may be one of the most powerful steps you can take to protect your kidneys?

Maintaining a healthy weight doesn't just benefit your heart. It can also help slow kidney damage and lower your risk of chronic kidney disease.

Here are 5 ways weight loss supports kidney health:

đź’š 1. Lowers Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of kidney disease. Losing weight can help bring blood pressure down, reducing stress on your kidneys.

đź’š 2. Improves Blood Sugar Control
If you have diabetes or prediabetes, weight loss can improve how your body uses insulin and help lower blood sugar, protecting the tiny blood vessels in your kidneys.

đź’š 3. Reduces Protein in the Urine
Weight loss has been shown to decrease protein leakage into the urine, an important sign of kidney damage.

đź’š 4. Decreases Inflammation
Excess body fat increases inflammation throughout the body. Losing weight can reduce inflammation, helping your kidneys function more efficiently.

đź’š 5. Slows the Progression of Kidney Disease
Research shows that achieving and maintaining a healthy weight may help preserve kidney function and slow the progression of chronic kidney disease in many people.

Every pound lost is a step toward better health. If you're living with kidney disease, talk with your healthcare provider about a safe weight-loss plan that's right for you.

đź’š Could You Be Someone's Second Chance?

A living kidney donor can give someone with kidney failure the opportunity for a healthier, longer life. In many cases, receiving a kidney from a living donor means a shorter wait time and better long-term outcomes than waiting for a deceased donor transplant.

If you've ever wondered:
✔️ Am I eligible to donate a kidney?
✔️ What does the evaluation process involve?
✔️ What is surgery and recovery like?
✔️ Can I live a healthy life with one kidney?

This resource from VCU Health answers these questions and more. You'll also hear the inspiring story of a living donor and transplant recipient whose lives were forever changed through the gift of donation.

Education can save lives. Even if living donation isn't right for you, sharing this information could help someone else find the answer they've been praying for.

Doorways is a nonprofit organization in Richmond, Virginia, that provides lodging and support services for patients and their families who travel to receive specialized medical care, especially at facilities like VCU Health.

For patients like Olivia, Doorways can be incredibly important because it offers:

- Affordable overnight lodging near the hospital.
- A place for family members to stay during long appointments, surgeries, or hospitalizations.
- Transportation assistance to and from medical appointments (for eligible guests).
- Meals, kitchens, laundry facilities, and common areas that make extended medical stays more manageable.
- A supportive community of other patients and caregivers going through similar experiences.

Many transplant evaluations take several days and may require multiple appointments, tests, and consultations. If a patient lives hours away, staying at Doorways helps reduce travel stress and ensures they can attend all of their appointments without having to drive back and forth.

In Olivia's video, when she says she and her mom stayed at Doorways, she's referring to the nonprofit lodging facility that made it possible for them to be close to VCU while she completed her kidney transplant evaluation.

🎒 One Small Gift. One Big Difference.

Did you know that for about the cost of a meal for two at Chick-fil-A, you can provide an elementary school student with a backpack filled with school supplies?

That's one backpack.
One child.
One less burden on a family.

This year, The Kidney Compass is collecting school supplies to help students start the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn.

Your donation doesn't just buy pencils and notebooks. It tells a child, "Someone believes in you."

đź’š Here's how you can help:
🎒 Sponsor a backpack with supplies.
✏️ Donate new school supplies.
đź’µ Make a monetary donation, and we'll do the shopping for you.

Together, we can make sure more children walk into school with everything they need to succeed.

Every backpack is a reminder that our community cares.

One of the most important steps in the kidney transplant journey is getting on a transplant waiting list.

For people living with Stage 5 kidney disease or kidney failure, being evaluated by a transplant center like VCU is more than just another doctor's appointment. It's an opportunity to determine if they're a candidate for a kidney transplant and, if approved, be placed on the national transplant waiting list. The sooner someone is listed, the sooner they can begin waiting for a life-saving kidney.

In this video, Olivia is at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for her transplant evaluation. This milestone represents hope, preparation, and another step toward receiving the kidney she needs.

While waiting on the transplant list, many patients continue dialysis for months or even years. That's why living kidney donors are so important. A living donor can often shorten the wait and provide someone with a second chance at life.

Please keep Olivia in your prayers as she continues this journey. If you've ever considered becoming a living kidney donor or would like to learn more about the process, we'd love to connect with you.

Every share, every prayer, and every conversation helps bring hope to someone waiting.

Can something as simple as lemon water support your kidney health? 🍋💧

The answer… might surprise you.

Lemon water isn’t a cure for kidney disease—but it can play a small supportive role when used the right way.

Here’s what you should know:

✨ It may help prevent kidney stones
Lemons contain citrate, which can help reduce the formation of certain types of kidney stones.

đź’§ It encourages hydration
Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you can do for your kidneys—and lemon water can make it easier to drink more.

⚖️ It’s generally kidney-friendly
Lemons are low in potassium, making them a better option than many other fruits for some kidney patients.

But here’s the key… 👇

đźš« Lemon water is NOT a treatment or cure
đźš« Advanced kidney disease may require fluid restrictions
🚫 Always follow your doctor’s guidance first

đź’ˇ The takeaway:
Small habits like staying hydrated can support your overall kidney health—but they should always be part of a bigger care plan.

Your kidneys do a lot for you… make sure you’re taking care of them too. 💚
