Let’s talk about Elder!
Have you seen all the shrubs/bushy plants blooming white in the ditches lately??
It’s probably elder. Sambucus canadensis is American Black Elderberry. (Btw, we have many plants with the scientific name canadensis- it means “of Canada”. The Europeans were the first to catalog these plants in an official capacity and they did their collecting in Canada.)
Elder has compound leaves with 5 leaflets coming from the main vein. I think sometimes there are 7 leaflets, but it’s almost always 5.
Elder has long been employed by indigenous people of this continent.
Elder has medicine in every part, but they require some study! Don’t just go using every part without learning about it first.
Elder is flowering right now- beautiful clusters of small white flowers. Each flower will turn into a very small berry.
Elderflower is so sweet. It is said to be a diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, expectorant, antispasmodic, and diuretic. This makes it a good choice for coughs and colds, especially with fever. It’s also used to make a particularly tasty liquor in the UK.
Elderberry is sweet tart. It is said to be anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, and immune stimulating. This makes it a good choice for onset of symptoms, supporting the immune system to kick into a higher gear, so the speak.
Both can be used in making tincture, tea, and syrup. They work well together.
So if you have access to unsprayed elder that’s flourishing, consider harvesting some flowers (maybe tomorrow since it’s rained so much). Leave enough to gather some berries after they ripen. Also, plant more and leave enough for the birds.
Rosemary Gladstar recommends a tea blend of elderflower, peppermint, catnip, & echinacea for fevers.
I like to add elderflowers to my coffee grounds.
Everyone loves elderberry syrup, right? It doesn’t keep long when you make it at home, but if you keep the dried herbs on hand then you can make it when you need it. (Or you can buy Elderberry Dump Jars from me!)
