Tomorrow Mountain Mage will be at The Farmers Market at Brock's Gap!
This will be my ONLY Saturday in Sept at Brock’s Gap, so make sure you come get what you need to skip the shipping.

I will have passionflower fruits for tasting and buying, so you can experience this wonderful plant and have seeds!
I will also have a special product “guest”- Sore Throat Spray by Walden FARMacy. They’ve been so kind as to let me wholesale this product to bring it to you guys who shop markets where they are not. It’s an excellent things to have in hand during these season changes and while we get used to the germs at school.
Don’t forget about your local farmers- it’s hot, our gardens look terrible, we’re tired of this business at this point in the year 😂
But we keep showing up for you, so do the same for us please! There is still produce to be eaten!

This week I’ve been overwhelmed with everyday life. I have 5 kids, 4 at home. 3 of them started new schools last month. 2 of those are seniors in high school. One of them left from homeschool to start the new school.
Did I mention I’m overwhelmed?
The schools are good schools. The teachers are kind and the admin is helpful.
While they’re adjusting to these things, I’m adjusting to the transition from homeschool teacher mom to … mom. I’m happy for all of them, and I feel these are all good changes. I’m still learning what this season will look like and what I need to be doing.

I’ve spent time moving furniture (like my new apothecary shelf? It’s an actual old apothecary shelf!).
I spend a lot of time cutting grass (we have 19 acres and for the ticks to be kept in check, the grass has to be cut traditionally at this time)
I got fairly sunburned this week (Lavender Salve to the rescue).
And I realized … I was sinking into darkness a bit. I’ve struggled with depression and sleep issues for much of my life. I know I need sunshine and exercise and people. When I realized I wasn’t exercising any more besides some walking because I didn’t feel like it, I knew I needed to shift something.

This feels kind of silly to say- but remember that I’m working on my grief and depression tincture with mimosa bark? 😆 🤦🏻‍♀️
Well, here’s a good reason to test it out.
I have 2 other people testing it for me as well.
I had not tried it myself because I wasn’t in need of it just then. But I am now.

Last night I tried just 4 drops. I slept so well. I woke up easily. I felt like a cloud had lifted this morning. This is not miraculous- this is how the plants work. This is also something I will use at least several days in a row to get myself to a normal-me state of mind, if you will. I love knowing that it works so well!
I’m going to see if I can get it done by the end of the month for Homestead Hollow.
I have a lot of work to do before then!

At Wild Medicine Conference 2026, I went on plant walks with Phyllis D. Light and learned so much wisdom about our native plants. She is just a wealth of knowledge. And you should absolutely join us for WMC 2027.

Winged sumac and staghorn sumac are bushes/shrubs with berries. The berries are food and medicine. People often say the berries have a lemon flavor and add them to lemonade. Native wisdom says that sumac berries are probably more potent in immune boosting than even elderberries.

I’m excited to work with these this year as a new plant friend.
Funny story- when we first moved here, I thought these were elderberries. And then I thought they were red elderberries and poisonous 🫣 THIS IS WHY WE LEARN PLANT IDENTIFICATION 😂

Is anyone else feeling that tickle of seasonal sinus stuff starting up?

So many people this time of year will blame goldenrod for those issues…
Please don’t!
Goldenrod is the 3rd picture- beautiful tall stalks of vibrant green leaves, bright yellow flowers in towers at the top. This is pollinated by insects. It actually is really good at helping support the immune system and keeping that histamine reaction in check against seasonal allergies. (Just ask my dad! 🫶🏻) Goldenrod is also supportive of kidneys and liver function.

The first 2 pictures are ragweed. It has a more bushy, broad set of stalks with more yellow-green flowering tops. This plant is wind pollinated. Guess which one is more likely to get pollen in our faces and upset our sinuses?

You understand, right?
Just like pine trees release all that pollen in the spring because they’re wind pollinated (when your car, house, & cat all turn yellow/green), so the ragweed releases its pollen into the wind.

This plant is the culprit of most autumn histamine responses. There are many other things blooming this time of year, but most are not wind pollinated. And now you know!
