Today is National Overdose Awareness Day. đź’ś

And if we’re serious about addressing the fentanyl epidemic, we have to talk about the people standing beside the person struggling with addiction: their families.

You cannot force someone into lasting recovery. And shame, criticism, arguing, begging, monitoring, and trying to control their use often push everyone further into the cycle. đź’”

But families are not powerless.

They can learn how to: ✨ Communicate without shaming
✨ Set boundaries without abandoning
✨ Stop unintentionally reinforcing addiction
✨ Encourage healthier behavior
✨ Increase the likelihood that their loved one chooses treatment
✨ Take care of themselves in the process

We have treatment centers. We have therapists. We have detox programs.

But I believe one of the most underused tools in fighting this epidemic is teaching families what to do before their loved one is ready for treatment. đź’ś

That’s why I created my FREE Family Addiction Toolkit — practical guidance for people who love someone struggling with addiction.

You may not be able to control whether someone uses today. But you can learn how to become a healthier, more effective part of their recovery environment. đź’ś

Trauma doesn’t always look like flashbacks and nightmares.

For some people, trauma changes the way they experience themselves, their emotions, and their relationships.

PTSD commonly involves re-experiencing trauma, avoiding reminders, and feeling as though danger is still present.

Complex PTSD includes those symptoms plus deeper, persistent struggles with:

• regulating emotions
• shame and negative beliefs about yourself
• trusting, connecting with, or feeling safe with other people

This is one reason developmental and prolonged trauma can be so confusing. You may not consciously feel like you’re “reliving” the past—but the past may still be shaping how you see yourself and how safe you feel with others.

These patterns aren’t simply personality flaws. They can be adaptations that developed in response to prolonged or repeated trauma.

Understanding the pattern is often the beginning of changing it.

If you love someone struggling with addiction, you may be trying everything you can think of to help.

Checking on them. Trying to figure out if they're using. Giving money because you're afraid of what will happen if you don't. Fixing consequences. Setting boundaries and then struggling to hold them.

It’s exhausting.

You can’t control whether someone chooses recovery—but you can change how you respond, and your responses matter.

I created a FREE Family Addiction Toolkit to give you a practical place to start.

Inside, you'll find tools for:
• Setting healthier boundaries
• Communicating more effectively
• Understanding helping vs. rescuing
• Responding to crises more intentionally
• Recognizing opportunities to encourage change

When someone you love is struggling with addiction, it can feel like your whole life starts revolving around their choices, their crises, and their recovery.

You may have been told there’s nothing you can do except “detach.”

CRAFT offers another option.

Community Reinforcement and Family Training teaches practical, evidence-based strategies to help you:

• communicate differently
• reduce conflict and chaos
• stop unintentionally reinforcing addictive behavior
• take better care of yourself
• learn ways to positively influence change

You cannot control someone else’s recovery. But that doesn’t mean you are powerless.

My 6-week virtual CRAFT group is for family members and loved ones of someone struggling with addiction.

What if trying harder to make them stop is actually making things harder?

Shame, pressure, arguing, pleading, rescuing—we do these things because we’re desperate for someone we love to change.

CRAFT offers another way. One that’s evidence-based, practical, and focused on what you can actually influence.

You can’t control whether someone gets sober. But you can learn strategies that give change a better chance.

I'm launching a new 6-week virtual skills + support group for family members and partners who want practical tools for navigating addiction without letting it take over their own lives.

This first group is just **$125 for all 6 sessions** and limited to about 10 people.
