Yoga for Scleroderma

Yoga for Scleroderma We offer a comprehensive program of yoga, breathwork & meditation to benefit those with Scleroderma. exponentially. These sessions are open to ALL.

Yoga for Scleroderma teaches the therapeutic benefits of yoga - to include postures (and variations), breath-work, and guided relaxations and meditations - for individuals who have Scleroderma. The journey began with an invitation to teach yoga during the Scleroderma Foundation’s 2002 National Conference in Las Vegas. Which lead to a full program and video content that applies the techniques of Yo

ga for the Special Child® - the Sonia Sumar Method to the symptoms of scleroderma. Since that time, the efforts and offerings have continued grow. When the COVID pandemic began in 2020, we were optimistic in the beginning that life would return to normal quickly. We hoped to be off globe-trotting again, doing what we love and supporting the Scleroderma community as we had in recent years attending in-person events and being physically present. That optimism was short-lived and we had to find new ways to connect and continue to offer our presence and support our mission. As a result, we host two weekly LIVE Zoom guided meditation sessions that we call “Wednesday Wind-Down” - a chance for individuals to join us for 15-30 minutes to take care of their physical and mental health in these challenging times. After all, stress management is a key factor to managing autoimmune conditions like Scleroderma. The audio only portion of these guided meditations sessions are recorded then turned into the podcast that we share each week via podcast AND YouTube platforms. This is our biggest outreach effort to date, and we couldn’t be more proud. This work has spawned other efforts like webinars and Zoom attendance at Support Groups - both in larger numbers than when we were mobile. Additionally, on our YouTube Channel we are now beginning to offer some of our videos with closed-captioning and translations into other languages – Hindi, Dutch, and Mandarin to start. While the world battled a pandemic, we found a blessing in disguise.

Meet Alexis Harrison: Alexis started practicing yoga during her senior year in college to combat the pain and swelling of Hashimoto’s and the dryness of Sjogren’s. Alexis later added mindfulness to her self-care which she continued through her first pregnancy with no complications despite being high risk.

At 31, she had a 1 year old, worked in a hospital, and was diagnosed with Scleroderma. She practiced yoga almost every day with mini sets of poses first thing in the morning to help her get up and going. Alexis is now a yoga teacher dedicated to bringing the benefits of yoga to children and young adults living with Scleroderma.

In 2020 in response to COVID Alexis, who has interstitial lung disease and was pregnant, temporarily moved all her teaching online. The result? Pregnancy Yoga for Scleroderma is available on the Yoga for Scleroderma YouTube channel. Alexis, Daniel and Zoe welcomed baby Beck to the family on January 6, 2021.

Meet Haley Pilkington when she is not practicing or teaching yoga:
I’m Haley and I’m a New York based actor, writer and model. I grew up in North Jersey, and found my passion for the arts through singing and playing piano. My first role ever was when I was 11 years old playing Young Fan in ‘ A Christmas Carol’, and I have been acting and creating ever since.

I have an MFA in Acting from East 15 Acting School in London, UK, where I lived for two years. There, I had the opportunity of performing at multiple theatres in London, including Shakespeare’s Globe, the Bridewell Theatre, and the Corbett Theatre. Since returning to the states I have been writing a One Woman show that explores my journey with Scleroderma and Pulmonary Hypertension.

In addition to my love for theatre and acting. I am a model devoted to spreading body positivity throughout my work. I have Scleroderma Morphea on my left arm/ left side of my body and modeled in a zine called ‘Female on Film’ that honored 10 models' journeys with body image."

I am drawn to projects that embrace all the imperfections of humanity and explore the mind-body connection."
