Almost any doctor can start the process. Your primary care provider is often the first step for basic testing.

If you’re planning spine surgery, your surgeon may also check to make sure your bones are strong enough. Common tests include bone density scans (DEXA), CT scans, and tools like the FRAX score to assess risk.

Getting checked is simple and it’s the first step to protecting your bones. 🦴🤍

What types of doctors should diagnose and treat osteoporosis? 👨‍⚕️

Many surgeons can spot low bone density, but they often refer patients to a bone health specialist for a deeper look.

These specialists find the cause whether it’s aging, menopause, or another health issue and create a care plan just for you, which may include medication, nutrition, or lifestyle changes.

Working with the right care team helps make sure your bones are as strong as possible especially before surgery.

There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment for osteoporosis.

There are many types of medications, and the right one depends on your specific needs and health history. Sometimes, if one treatment isn’t working well, your doctor may recommend switching to a different option.

The key is working with your care team, like your primary doctor, specialist, or surgeon to find what’s best for you.

Strong bones are key for successful spine surgery. 🦴

During spinal fusion, screws and rods must hold tightly in the bone. If bones are weak, it’s harder for that hardware to stay in place.

Think of it like putting a screw into solid wood vs. drywall strong bone gives a better grip and better results.

That’s why treating bone health before surgery can make a big difference in success.

Weak bones don’t just happen with age health issues play a role too. Family history, liver, or kidney problems can cause it earlier.

Your liver and kidneys help your body use vitamin D. Without it, calcium isn’t absorbed well, and bones can weaken. Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heavy alcohol use can also harm bone health.

Taking care of your overall health helps protect your bones and spine.

Osteoporosis medicines can help protect your bones but like all treatments, they can have side effects.

🦴 Some medicines that slow bone loss may cause heartburn or, in rare cases, jaw problems or certain leg fractures.

Other treatments that build bone can raise calcium levels and are usually used for a limited time. Newer options may carry a small risk of heart-related events, like stroke or heart attack.

The good news: serious side effects are rare, and your doctor will help choose what’s safest for you.

Osteoporosis happens when the body loses too much bone or doesn’t build enough.

There are two main ways it’s treated:

Some medicines slow down bone loss. These include common options like bisphosphonates and denosumab.

Others help your body build new bone. These newer treatments include teriparatide, abaloparatide, and romosozumab.

The goal is simple: protect the bone you have and help build more for a stronger, healthier spine.

Should you ask your surgeon about the impact of your bone health on your surgery? Yes. 💙

Bone health can affect how well your surgery heals, and many people don’t know they have weak bones until they’re tested. That’s why bone checks are often done before surgery. If bones are weak, surgery may be delayed to help strengthen them first.

Stronger bones can lead to better results and fewer problems later. Most people start screening in their 40s or 50s and almost everyone in their 60s.
